Holiday apartment in Dravce: Church, History and Hiking Trail

Dravce lies on the southern slopes of the Levočské vrchy mountains. Its location on Main Road 18 between Levoča and Poprad also provides a clear geographical orientation: Levoča is approximately 8 km away. The village is home to the Church of St. Elisabeth and a stone road bridge.

Culture and History

The Church of St. Elisabeth in Dravce is originally early Gothic and dates from the second half of the 13th century. Its wall paintings date from the late 13th century and the mid-15th century. The church also contains a carved Gothic depiction of Calvary. A bell in the bell tower is dated 1516. The Church of St. Elisabeth in Dravce is also a stop on the Gothic Route.

The different components of the church point to several periods without reducing the building to a single era. Its architecture, paintings, woodcarving and bell each provide distinct indications within the same sacred context. Its designation as a stop on the Gothic Route adds a broader regional connection to this local perspective, while the individual furnishings remain rooted in Dravce itself.

The documented history of the village goes back to the 13th century. Dravce was mentioned in 1263 as a settlement of royal falconers. In 1288, an Antonite monastery was founded there. A xenodochium, considered the oldest hospital in the Spiš region, was established beside this Antonite monastery at the end of the 13th century.

The village’s history thus includes both an early reference to the settlement and institutional foundations from the later 13th century. The references to royal falconers, the Antonite monastery and the xenodochium belong to different historical contexts. Together, they make the village’s documented heritage comprehensible through its named stages, without merging the individual details into a single function or era.

The stone road bridge in Dravce is another architectural monument. It is listed in the Central Register of Monuments of Slovakia. Its arch is visible from only one side because one side was covered with concrete during the construction of the bypass road. This structural alteration is part of the bridge’s present appearance and explains why its original construction feature cannot be seen from both sides.

In the case of the bridge, its inherited appearance therefore includes not only its material and form but also the alteration visible in the structure. The register entry and the one-sided visibility describe two different aspects of the same structure: its documented classification and what can be directly read from its present form.

Hiking

A specific way to understand the surrounding area on a marked trail is the route from Dravce to Pod Vtáčím vrchom. The hiking trail is marked in yellow and is 3.3 km long in total.

The marking color and stated total length give the route a clearly defined form. Together with the named starting point and destination, the trail can be understood as an independent section within the area surrounding Dravce. Its description remains limited to the specified trail characteristics.
