Culture

The historic centre of Levoča is an urban monument reserve surrounded by relatively well-preserved town walls. It is home to the Church of St James, a Roman Catholic parish church from the 14th century that is considered one of Slovakia’s most significant religious buildings. The Late Gothic wooden main altar of St James is 18.6 metres high and was made between 1507 and 1517 in the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. Levoča’s Renaissance town hall houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the town.

Spišská Kapitula is home to the Cathedral of St Martin, a Late Romanesque three-nave basilica with a two-towered façade, built between 1245 and 1275. The cathedral also preserves a stone depiction of a reclining lion from the 13th century, as well as significant remains of medieval wall paintings.

The Kaštieľ Spišský Hrhov manor house was built in the Neo-Baroque style with Classicist elements, and the Neo-Baroque Chapel of St Anne adjoins the manor house. An older Renaissance manor house in Spišský Hrhov was part of the warning system of Spišský hrad Castle, which used light signals. An exhibition dedicated to Master Paul presents copies of sculptures made after original works by the Levoča woodcarver Master Paul.

The Dni Majstra Pavla cultural festival is a tribute to Master Paul and to the generations of Levoča residents who contributed to the town’s artistic and historical heritage. It includes woodcarving, painting and photography workshops, as well as demonstrations of craftsmanship by young artists and craftspeople. Tajomná Levoča is the closing event and highlight of this cultural festival. At Tajomná Levoča events in previous years, there was a light show in Levoča town centre. Levočské babie leto is an annual music festival in the historic town of Levoča, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Surroundings

The surrounding area includes Spišský hrad Castle, a chateau, the ruins of Kláštorisko, the Spišská Kapitula monastery complex, and the mountains of Brezová, Roveň and Krúžok. The nearby area also includes Medvedzie Vrch mountain and the Sans-souci church.

Nature

Torysky lies in a picturesque landscape of forests, pastures and meadows, suitable for peaceful hiking and nature experiences. The Torysky–Javorina route offers views of Kráľova hoľa and leads to the Javorina–Marčulina lookout tower.

The Resort Levočská Dolina biological swimming complex consists of three pools: a pond, a swimming pool and an external biological filtration system.

Visiting

The MuzikMuzeum in Spišský Hrhov welcomes visitors on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; admission must be reserved by telephone or email. The Museum of Special Education in Levoča recommends reserving admission in advance. At Košická brána, there are two free overflow car parks at the town entrance for visitors arriving by car.
