Holiday apartment in Granč-Petrovce between travertine and Renaissance

Granč-Petrovce combines a striking travertine landscape with ecclesiastical architecture and local history. The Sobotisko natural monument site, a travertine hill, lies to the west above the village. The churches and the Petróczyovský Manor House also preserve various historical traces, while a cycling route runs directly through Granč-Petrovce.

Nature

The protected area west of Granč-Petrovce was designated in 1987 to protect a partly forested, geomorphologically distinctive travertine hill. The protected travertine hill is also an important archaeological site. Finds include stone tools and traces of hearths from the Middle Paleolithic. Geological formations and early human remains thus exist side by side at this location. The Sivá Brada–Dreveník educational trail is located nearby. Its focus is on natural history, nature conservation, culture and history; it is suitable for hikers seeking a moderate level of difficulty. The natural environment, conservation history and archaeology are presented there within a shared thematic context.

Cycling route and location

The blue-marked cycling route 2710 runs through Granč-Petrovce. It forms part of a route measuring 19.4 kilometres in total between Dúbrava and Vyšný Slavkov. Granč-Petrovce can be reached via a turn-off from the E18 main road before the Branisko Tunnel. The village's location can therefore be identified both by the signposted cycling connection and by the aforementioned road access.

Culture

Granč-Petrovce is home to the new Church of St Martin, which was completed in 1994 after a 16-month construction period. Its 25-metre-high tower is a landmark of both the church and the municipality of Granč-Petrovce. Inside, a dominant wooden relief of St Martin can be found.

A second important religious site is the Renaissance Church of St Martin. It was built in 1626 and has a Renaissance side altar dedicated to St Martin dating from 1635. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The two churches combine more recent architectural history with preserved Renaissance elements and give the village a clearly recognisable cultural profile. Their different construction dates and furnishing details highlight the contrast between the 1994 building and the Renaissance church with its side altar.

History

The Petróczyovský Manor House was originally a late Baroque building from the second half of the 18th century. The building is associated with Štefan Petróczy, an important pioneer of helicopter construction. He was born in the Petróczyovský Manor House in 1876 and worked in Austria. The manor house stands in the southwest of Granč-Petrovce and currently houses an art primary school. The building thus brings together architectural history, the biography of a pioneer associated with aviation and a present-day use.

Religious tradition

The village's religious history is still visible today. Every year, believers from Granč-Petrovce celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with an indulgence ceremony.
