Šaľa combines a history shaped by a water castle, a protected cultural monument, historical exhibitions and two clearly named cycling routes. The Renaissance Manor in Šaľa was originally a water castle, probably built on older foundations in the 16th century. At the same time, it is a faithful copy of the palace of the Turzo family in Veľká Bytča.

Culture

One of the notable buildings is the Roľnícky dom. It was built in 1730 and is a protected cultural monument. Its wattle-and-daub walls are made of woven willow rods; the building also has a thatched roof. Alongside the Renaissance Manor, this provides another named example of Šaľa’s historic building heritage.

The Church of St Margaret of Antioch is a Neoclassical building constructed between 1828 and 1837 on the site of an older church. This older church had been built by the 16th century at the latest. The present building has a single nave, a straight-ended presbytery and a vaulted domed space.

The Holy Trinity sculpture group is a notable focal point in Šaľa’s square. The sculpture group was erected in 1895. Another cultural venue is the Dom ľudového bývania in Šaľa, which has housed an exhibition accessible year-round since 2009. The Mestská knižnica Jána Johanidesa, a public library with a general collection of media, is also open to visitors to the city of Šaľa.

History

The “Zo súčasnosti do minulosti” exhibition at CVČ Šaľa covers the history of the city of Šaľa and its surrounding area. Its timespan ranges from recent events to the earliest traces of human life in this area. The event Jánske ohne was also connected to local tradition: it recalled an old custom specific to the Šaľa area.

Geography

Šaľa lies in the northern part of the Danubian Lowland.

Cycling Routes

The Váh cycling route from Horné Zelenice to Šaľa is 36 kilometres long and ends in Šaľa. In Šaľa, it passes beneath the bridge over the Váh and then continues south along a paved embankment. Another named route is the Šaľa–Diakovce cycling route. It is 1,565 metres long and begins in Šaľa on Diakovská Street.

A reservoir is located near Kráľová nad Váhom in the surrounding area of Šaľa. Opportunities there include swimming, sailing, windsurfing, water skiing and fishing.

Enjoyment
