Landscape and water

Šaľa lies on both banks of the lower Váh and extends across a fertile plain in the lowlands. The city is located in a warm climate zone with an average of 50 summer days per year. For some people planning a trip to Šaľa includes the wish to rent a holiday apartment.

At Kráľová nad Váhom, the dammed Váh forms a body of water about 4 km from Šaľa that can be used in many ways for recreation, with opportunities for swimming, yachting, windsurfing, water skiing and fishing. The region around Šaľa is considered particularly suitable for summer recreation involving swimming and water sports because of its warm summers, early start to spring and long sunny autumn months.

The 1,565-metre-long Šaľa–Diakovce cycle path begins on Diakovská Street in Šaľa. The Diakovce thermal spa is one of the largest, best-developed and also oldest tourism facilities in the Šaľa area.

History and architectural heritage

The first written mention of Šaľa dates from 1002. When King Ferdinand I elevated Šaľa to a market town by a charter of privileges in 1536, the city was granted the right to hold weekly markets and two annual fairs.

The building now known as Renesančný kaštieľ was originally a water castle, probably built on older foundations in the 16th century. Renesančný kaštieľ is a faithful copy of the palace of the Turzo family in Veľká Bytča. The Church of St Margaret of Antioch is a Neoclassical building constructed from 1828 to 1837 on the site of an older church.

Roľnícky dom was built in 1730 and is a protected cultural monument. The Holy Trinity ensemble in Šaľa’s square was erected in 1895 in memory of the ball lightning that struck the tower of the local church in 1886.

Šaľa was located at a crossroads of the so-called Česká cesta and the road from Nitra to Bratislava. The construction of the railway line between Vienna and Budapest in 1850 contributed to the development of Šaľa.

Culture and activities

The folk ensemble FS Šaľan was founded in 2015 and operates under MsKS Šaľa at the City of Šaľa. FS Šaľan offers dance performances at cultural and social events.
