Sobrance District: Holiday apartments and houses

The Sobrance District features wetlands, protected forest communities, distinctive rock formations and the volcanic lake Morské oko. A total of 283 bird species have been recorded at the Senianske rybníky; the wetland is of great importance for biodiversity and numerous endangered plant and animal species. Morské oko in the Sobrance District is a 13-hectare impounded volcanic lake at an altitude of 618 m.

Nature

The PR Lysá Nature Reserve in Podhoroď and Choňkovce protects rare forest and forest-steppe communities as well as an isolated occurrence of the many-flowered oak (Quercus polycarpa). In the PR Lysák Nature Reserve in Remetské Hámre, thermophilous beech-oak communities are protected. The many-flowered oak (Quercus polycarpa) and Dalechamp's oak (Quercus dalechampii) grow there at an altitude of 821 m.

The PR Machnatý vrch Nature Reserve in Vyšná Rybnica protects rare moss communities in acidic beech forests, including the endangered pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata). The PR Drieň Nature Reserve in Hlivištia preserves forest and forest-steppe communities on an andesite substrate, with a mass occurrence of the cornelian cherry (Cornus mas). The Beňatinský travertín Natural Monument protects the easternmost travertine outcrop in Slovakia; travertine formation continues there to this day.

Trails and landscape

The Morské oko–Sninský kameň section of the educational trail is 4 km long and leads from 618 to 1,005 m above sea level. Malé Morské oko has a water surface area of 0.33 ha, a depth of 2.4 to 4 m and no surface outflow. Kaštielik Morské oko can be reached from a car park via a blue-marked hiking trail approximately 800 m long.

The Vtáčím rajom educational trail in the Sobrance District is 16 km long and has five observation towers.

Culture and history

The Múzeum Na čiare documents life on the Slovak-Ukrainian border as well as the history of smuggling and people trafficking. The main area of the Múzeum Na čiare in Lekárovce is open to the public; visits must be arranged by telephone, and the tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The Gitarové múzeum in Sobrance presents an exhibition featuring hundreds of guitars and thousands of historical objects. During guided interactive tours, visitors can try out many of the instruments on display themselves. Kaštielik Morské oko was built on the shore of Morské oko in 1924 as a place of recreation. The Greek Catholic wooden church in Ruská Bystrá is one of the listed wooden churches of the Slovak Carpathians.

Regional topics

Sobranecké kúpele is one of the oldest spa resorts in Slovakia. Its mineral springs are already mentioned in documents from 1336; five cold, slightly carbonated, hydrogen sulfide-bearing and medium-mineralized sodium chloride springs rise there.

The Sobranecký wine-growing region has a long tradition of wine production. The nearby company REGIA TT, s. r. o., in Orechová produces high-quality varietal and vintage wines that have received awards at various wine exhibitions.

Geographical location

The Vyšné Nemecké border crossing in the Sobrance District crosses the state border into Ukraine.
