Spišská Nová Ves District: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Slovenský raj National Park extends across Spišská Nová Ves District. It is the only large-scale protected area there. Slovenský raj has 268.2 kilometres of marked hiking trails and 13 educational trails totalling almost 89 kilometres.

Nature

The Slovenský raj can also be explored by bicycle: the national park and its buffer zone have 110 kilometres of marked cycle paths. Of these, 65 kilometres run through the national park and 45 kilometres through its buffer zone.

The approximately 74-kilometre cycle route around Slovenský raj forms a loop starting and ending in Spišská Nová Ves. It starts and ends at the bus station, railway station and car park in Spišská Nová Ves.

Another marked connection is the Spišská cyklomagistrála. It connects Hrabušice, Spišské Tomášovce, Smižany, Spišská Nová Ves and Markušovce, then continues towards Spišský hrad and Kežmarok. The Hnilecká cyklomagistrála runs through Mlynky, Hnilec and Nálepkovo.

Culture and history

Spišská Nová Ves District has more than 1,560 registered movable and immovable cultural monuments. There are also three conservation areas: Spišská Nová Ves, Spišské Vlachy and Markušovce.

In Kláštorisko in Slovenský raj, there are restored remains of a Carthusian monastery dating from the 14th century.

The Spiš Museum has been located since 1954 in a historic building that was formerly the medieval town hall in Spišská Nová Ves. The museum has branches with exhibitions in Markušovce and Smižany. The natural history exhibition focuses on plants and animals that can be encountered while walking in this region.

The permanent exhibition of the ethnographic museum in Smižany presents the folk culture of central and lower Spiš from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Its main focuses are textiles, clothing and their production.

In the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, visitors can climb 155 steps to the 87-metre-high top of the tower. From there, they can enjoy views of Spišská Nová Ves, the surrounding area and the panorama of the High Tatras.

The Spiš Artists Gallery is housed in a historic burgher’s house in the centre of Spišská Nová Ves. The history of the house dates back to the second half of the 16th century. In three permanent exhibitions, the gallery presents 1,898 works of art.

The Railway Exposition in Spišská Nová Ves features a model railway and an exhibition of train models. On-site activities include trying out driving a locomotive and working as a train dispatcher. There is also a railway communication system, as well as visual material and historical memories of the Košice–Bohumín railway line.

The railway blast furnace in Krompachy, known as “maša”, dates from 1831.

The Spišské divadlo has operated under this name in the Reduta building since 1992 and has a history spanning more than 40 years.

Events

Spišský trh is a four-day event based on the market tradition of Spišská Nová Ves dating back to 6 December 1380. Fairground food is part of the event experience.

Dni mesta Spišská Nová Ves takes place annually at the end of summer. It includes a market for traditional crafts with almost 100 stalls.
