Culture and History

The Banícke múzeum in Gelnica documents mining, folk culture, the history of the town, geology and the guild system in its collections. The exhibits include miners’ tools, mine lamps, old mining maps, models illustrating ore extraction, and miners’ workwear and festive clothing.

The štôlňa Jozef was opened to the public in August 2016 and became part of the Banícke múzeum exhibition in Gelnica. The Banský skanzen contains a historic stamp mill powered by water from nearby Turzovské jazero, illustrating ore processing in the 17th century.

The covered wooden bridge between Kluknava and Štefanská Huta was built over the Hornád in 1832 from larch wood and is considered the only one of its kind in Slovakia. It is used for local pedestrian and car traffic, although car traffic is restricted. It is also regarded as a tourist attraction and a technical monument.

The Baroque chateau in Kluknava is a national cultural monument. Also in Kluknava, the Dom služobníctva is a national cultural monument; it houses the Múzeum obuvi. The Bujanovský Tunnel in Rolova Huta is a technical monument and was originally a railway tunnel connecting Rolova Huta with the Kozinec recreational area.

The Chapel of Saint Joseph in Smolník is a Baroque chapel from the 18th century. It stands in a meadow behind the village in the direction of Smolnícka Huta. In the immediate vicinity of Gelnica District is Cechy, a church; Svätá Anna, also a church, is located in the surrounding area. Kysacký hrad and Spiš Castle, both castles, are located farther away in the wider regional surroundings of Gelnica District.

Nature

Gelnica District is home to the natural monuments Margecianska línia and Závadské skalky. The protected natural area also includes the Kloptaň Nature Reserve and the Poľana peatland reserve. Forests cover 74.6 percent of the district, giving Gelnica District the highest proportion of forest in Slovakia.

Margecany lies at the confluence of the Hornád and Hnilec rivers on the left bank of the Ružín Reservoir. The mountains Žakarovský vrch, Rúbaň, Smolej and Krompašský vrch are located in the immediate vicinity of Gelnica District.

Trails and Activities

Officially marked cycle route 021 runs through Gelnica District from Margecany through the Hnilec Valley towards the Dedinky recreational area. The Banský náučný chodník starts at Banícke námestie, which is easily accessible from Gelnica mesto railway station, and is suitable for all age groups.

Turzov can be reached from Gelnica via a blue-marked hiking trail. The Lower Lake of Turzov offers opportunities for fishing. Padlých Park in the centre of Margecany is a well-maintained memorial park suitable for a short stay, quiet reflection and a peaceful walk.
