Trebišov District: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Trebišov is considered the gateway to Slovakia’s Tokaj wine region. The Tokaj Wine Route passes through Bara, Čerhov, Černochov, Malá Tŕňa, Slovenské Nové Mesto, Veľká Tŕňa and Viničky, as well as through the towns of Borša, Ladmovce and Zemplín, which are historically connected with the Tokaj microregion.

Culture

The permanent exhibitions at the museum in Trebišov cover Tokaj winegrowing and winemaking, including an archive of Tokaj wines; the history of agriculture in eastern Slovakia; the folk costumes of Zemplín; traditional crafts in Zemplín; historic tractors and internal combustion engines; steam ploughs and cable ploughs; the development of threshing in eastern Slovakia; and the archaeological monuments of Trebišov District. The museum is located in a Baroque-Classical château in the town park, which features a French garden.

The mausoleum of Count Július Andrássy in Trebišov was built in 1893 in the Neo-Gothic style, based on a design by the German architect Arthur Meining. The sarcophagus dates from 1893 to 1895 and was created by the Budapest sculptor Juraj Zala.

The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Trebišov has been a national cultural monument since 1963 and features Rococo paintings in 63 fields of the Gothic net vaulting of the choir and nave.

Borsi Rákóczi Castle offers an interactive exhibition, an escape room, a virtual experience game and panoramic projections.

Nature

The Boršiansky les protected area in the cadastral territory of Borša in Trebišov District preserves a habitat of European importance with lowland-type willow-poplar alluvial forests (91E0), as well as species of European importance such as the stag beetle (Lucanus cervus), thick-shelled river mussel (Unio crassus) and fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina). Protection levels 2 and 3 apply there; the area covers 7.93 ha.

The administration of the Latorica Protected Landscape Area is responsible for the territories of Michalovce and Trebišov districts.

Medzibodrožie consists of a network of river branches and periodically flooded habitats with adjoining alluvial forests, as well as floodplain meadows and pastures. The area protects characteristic breeding birds, including the ferruginous duck (Aythya nyroca), black tern (Chlidonias niger), little egret (Egretta garzetta), great egret (Egretta alba), purple heron (Ardea purpurea), great bittern (Botaurus stellaris), whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybridus), common redshank (Tringa totanus) and European bee-eater (Merops apiaster).

The Východoslovenská rovina is predominantly characterised by intensively farmed agricultural land; its steppe character benefits several bird species.

The Tajba National Nature Reserve is a former branch of the Bodrog and is subject to the strictest, fifth level of protection. The critically endangered European pond turtle breeds regularly in the Tajba area; waterfowl are also found there.

Borsuk is home to a protected occurrence of thermophilic vegetation with rare protected plant species, including Dictamnus albus and Iris pumila. An obsidian deposit was discovered there in the andesitic area above the vineyards.

Wine and Water

Medieval Tokaj wine cellars along the Tokaj Wine Route are carved into volcanic tuff.

The boat trip on the Bodrog begins at a boat harbour behind Viničky and can continue to Sárospatak in Hungary or to Tokaj.

Cycling and Views

The Dolnozemplínska long-distance cycle route runs for 22.5 km from Čerhov to Viničky. A 3.5 km section runs between Borša and Viničky and continues towards Zemplín along the Bodrog dam.

The Lesíkom cycle path runs for 10.2 km from Čerhov to Veľká Tŕňa through the forests of the Zemplín Hills and connects the two wine-growing towns via forest roads.

The Tokaj Lookout Tower is a 12-metre-high tower modelled on a wooden barrel, located in the vineyards between Malá Tŕňa and Černochov. It has a shelter and a children’s playground, serves as a rest area for tourists, cyclists and families with children, and offers views of the Tokaj region and its vineyards.
