Holiday apartments in Veľaty: Churches, Slaná studňa and landscape

Veľaty is located in the southwestern part of the East Slovak Lowland, north of the Zemplín Mountains. The village's historic sites include the Roman Catholic Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary and Slaná studňa: a church already stood on the site of the church in 1620, while the historic site of Slaná studňa was restored and opened to the public in 2014.

Landscape

The landscape around Veľaty includes arable land, forests, orchards, gardens, meadows and vineyards. Different forms of land use and woodland therefore contribute equally to the surroundings of the village. A 150-year-old sycamore maple is the surviving relic of the former park of the Andrássy family in Veľaty. The crown of this tree has a diameter of 29 metres. In the centre of Veľaty there is also a well-kept small park that invites visitors to take a walk.

Transport

Veľaty has a railway station on the Trebišov–Michaľany railway line. Buses also run through Veľaty on the Trebišov–Kráľovský Chlmec route. Both connections, with their respective route designations, form part of the local transport network.

Culture and history

The Greek Catholic church has a board-built groined vault covered with canvas. Its iconostasis was installed in 1934 and created by the woodcarver Anton Helfer. In 2005, the iconostasis was included in the list of cultural monuments.

The restored Roman Catholic Church of the Name of the Virgin Mary was consecrated on 11 September 1870. It contains a commemorative plaque bearing the name Aladár Andrássy, the years 1890–1895 and the family coat of arms. The furnishings also include a small bell from 1900, considered the second-oldest surviving bell in the surrounding area.

Slaná studňa

Slaná studňa is located on the southwestern edge of Veľaty, approximately 100 metres southeast of the railway line. The present-day site has an access path, a shelter with seating and a footbridge over the freely flowing water. The restored site, which has been opened to the public, thus preserves not only its historic name but also specific elements of its present-day design. Its location on the southwestern edge and approximate position in relation to the railway line provide additional geographical context for the site within Veľaty.

At Slaná studňa, there was a local spa at the end of the 19th century. Salty, alkaline iodine water was used there to treat inflammation of the upper respiratory tract and thyroid diseases. This use is part of the site's history and describes the spa at the end of the 19th century, not a present-day service. The former spa use and the current design of the restored site therefore belong to different periods of the area's history.
