Above the historic road between Žilina and Vrútky, Strečno Castle is a preserved medieval castle ruin.

Culture

Access to Strečno Castle is provided as part of a guided tour led by an instructor. The castle also houses an exhibition presenting the prehistory and history of Strečno Castle and the surrounding region. In 2013, the freely accessible Paseka recreational area was created below the castle, featuring a medieval village. Paseka comprises five small, fully equipped wooden houses with thatched roofs, a functioning bell tower and a well.

Nearby, the ruins of Starý hrad rise in the Domašínsky meander of the Váh above Strečno Castle. Starý hrad was first mentioned in documents in 1241 as royal property. Local history also includes the present-day masonry Church of St. Sophia, built in 1847. During the Christmas holidays, a nativity scene with moving figures is made accessible there every year.

The monument to the French partisans stands on Zvonica Hill in Strečno. A crypt beneath the monument contains the remains of 24 partisans. Memorial ceremonies commemorating the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising are held at the monument every year.

Landscape

The Domašínsky meander natural monument protects the most distinctive section of the Váh’s passage through the Malá Fatra. A wooden viewing tower stands on Špicák above Strečno. From there, you can see the Žilina Basin, the ridge of the Malá Fatra, parts of the Kysucká Highlands and the Strážov Mountains. The view also extends to four castles: Strečno, Starý hrad, Budatínsky hrad and Lietavský hrad.

A second access route to the viewing tower on Špicák is a green-and-white-marked educational trail that begins in the centre of Strečno. The viewing tower can also be reached via the yellow-marked hiking trail from the car park below Strečno Castle.

Active pursuits

The Plte Strečno rafting trip offers simultaneous views of Strečno Castle and Starý hrad from the Váh. It starts at the Bariérová landing stage and ends at the ferry in Strečno. The trip is led by an experienced raft guide, who shares interesting facts about the history and traditions of rafting along the way.

Strečnianska mašľa is an ultramarathon and recreational hike around Strečno. The route follows marked hiking trails and is offered over distances of 50 km and 25 km. The routes lead from Strečno into the Malá Fatra; part of the event takes place on marked trails through the national park. There is also a designated connection for mountain bike tours: the green-marked, relatively challenging Martin (ATC)–Strečno route ends in Strečno below Strečno Castle.
