Fačkov lies at the transition between the Strážov Mountains and the southern part of the Malá Fatra, in the Rajčianka valley. Kľak is part of the surrounding landscape: the mountain is designated as a national nature reserve and is subject to the fifth level of protection. The Kľak Site of European Importance, code SKUEV0240, covers 85.71 hectares and includes the cadastral areas of Fačkov and Vrícko. Kľak provides a habitat for large predators such as bears, wolves and lynxes.

Activities in Fačkov

In winter, the Fačkovské sedlo ski arena is available, with four ski lifts and seven ski runs; together, the runs have a total length of 5.8 kilometres. The facility also includes a children's lift with an easy ski run. The ski and snowboard school at Fačkovské sedlo teaches children and adults, from complete beginners to advanced skiers and snowboarders. With artificial lighting, the ski arena also offers night skiing.

A 15-kilometre cycle route through the local countryside runs by the Fačkovské sedlo ski arena. Along the route there are various rest areas and information boards about the local wildlife and plant life. A hiking route over Kľak leads from the car park at Fačkovské sedlo to Fačkov. It is 12 kilometres long, includes 549 metres of elevation gain and takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes. The trail alternates between meadows and forest on a well-trodden path.

Kľak is also associated with a set date: for 5 July 2025, the Klub slovenských turistov Kosodrevina Fačkov announced the 35th edition of its summer ascent of Kľak.

History and culture

Fačkov was first mentioned in written records in 1351 as a settlement. In the centre of the village stands the Church of Saint Nicholas. It dates from the 17th century and was remodelled in the Baroque style between 1788 and 1792. The single-nave building has a projecting block tower and Baroque windows with wrought-iron grilles.

The traditional clothing of the village includes the women's folk costume of Fačkov. It consisted of a white, gathered skirt, an apron made of blue-print fabric and embroidered white sleeve pieces.

Every year at Christmas, a folk group accompanies the Mass in Fačkov with accordion music and singing. A folk group also sings Slovak folk songs and traditional songs from the municipality of Fačkov. These songs were collected and made available by older generations.

Food and transport

At Fačkovské sedlo, Salaš Kľak serves traditional Slovak cuisine made with regional ingredients. The menu includes, among other dishes, bryndzové halušky, gazdovské halušky, strapačky and pirohy.

There is a bus stop at Fačkovské sedlo, served by a bus route running between Žilina and Prievidza.
