Holiday apartment in Sillein – UNESCO wire craft and paths along the Váh

Wire craft is part of Sillein’s cultural profile. Wire craft as a traditional craft and art form was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. At the Drotársky Pavilion, a permanent exhibition presents the history and material culture of Slovak wire craft.

In Sillein, both the living significance of a craft and its historical and material development are therefore central. In addition, the theater, palace, and castle showcase different cultural forms: the puppet theater focuses on professional stage art, while the Rosenfeldov palác and Budatín Castle convey architectural and museum impressions.

Culture

Bábkové divadlo v Žiline is Slovakia’s oldest professional puppet theater. The Rosenfeldov palác was built in the Art Nouveau style in 1907 and declared a national cultural monument in 2009. The exterior of the Rosenfeldov palác can be viewed as part of a tour organized by TIK Žilina. Budatín Castle is used as a museum and houses castle exhibitions.

The cultural sites thus clearly differ from one another, without any one replacing another: here, the theater tradition stands alongside an Art Nouveau building with organized exterior tours and a museum site with castle exhibitions. This creates a townscape in which art, architectural history, and museum displays become visible in different institutions.

Townscape

Mariánské náměstie was declared an urban heritage reserve in 1987 and is regarded as the historic heart of Žilina. The arcaded galleries of Mariánské náměstie continue along Hodžova and Radničná streets. Various cultural events regularly take place at Mariánské náměstie.

The square is therefore shaped not only by its protected status and historical classification. The continuous arcaded galleries also create a recognizable connection with the adjoining streets, while the regular cultural events complement the square as a public venue.

Open space

Budatín Park is a historic, freely accessible English landscape park. It offers opportunities for walking, summer picnics, and selected sports games. These uses combine the historic park setting with different forms of movement and recreation without changing its character as an English landscape park.

The park therefore brings quiet forms of recreation and selected physical activity together. Its historic character remains the unifying feature: walking, summer picnics, and sports games take place in the same English landscape park, but are not combined into a single type of use.

Water and activity

Vodné dielo Žilina was built on the Váh River near Žilina. At Vodné dielo Žilina, visitors have access to a paved path for walking, cycling, and inline skating. The Vodné dielo skate park is open to every visitor, provided that the rules and operating regulations are observed.

Two clearly described activity areas meet by the water: the paved path is intended for several forms of transport, while the skate park is a separate facility with applicable rules and operating regulations. Its proximity to the Váh is part of the geographical setting of Vodné dielo Žilina.

Paths

The city walking routes in Žilina are short and not very demanding, although they overcome differences in elevation between the squares; neither hiking boots nor any special preparation is required.

The paths therefore connect several squares in the city while retaining their short, undemanding character despite the differences in elevation. No special preparation is intended for the city walks described; the statement that hiking boots are not required is explicitly part of this classification.
