Zástranie and Straník: Trails, Panoramic Views, Culture

From Zástranie, a yellow-marked hiking trail leads uphill through forest switchbacks to the Straník viewpoint; the ascent to Straník takes approximately 1.5 hours. Straník is a 769 m-high mountain in the Kysucká vrchovina, 6 km east of Žilina. From the summit of Straník, there are views of the Malá Fatra, the Žilina Valley and Kysuce.

Air Sports

The paragliding launch site is located approximately 1 km east of the village of Zástranie. Straník is now an important center for paragliding and hang gliding. Paragliding and hang gliding therefore represent a separate type of activity alongside hiking and cycling.

Culture

The archaeological site of the Straník hillfort has been protected as a registered cultural monument since December 30, 1967. Finds from various areas of the Straník hillfort include pieces from the Lusatian culture of the Early to Late Bronze Age as well as from the Early to Late Iron Age, including the Late La Tène period, which is referred to as the Púchov culture in northern Slovakia.

The tourist shelter and footbridge on Straník were ceremonially opened on April 9, 2016, during the Žilinská 1000-ka event. Both received the CE.ZA.AR 2016 Architecture Prize of the Slovak Chamber of Architects in the Outdoor Space category.

The parish church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows stands in Zástranie; it was consecrated in 2000.
