Podzámčok – Holiday apartment between castle ruins and folk culture

In Podzámčok, the historical traces begin at the ruins of Dobronivá Castle: they were probably built after the Tatar invasion in the second half of the 13th century as a watchtower on an old trade route south of Zvolen.

Culture and history

The grounds of Dobronivá Castle feature a recreational park with benches, a fire pit and an information board. From the end of a road, a short, unmarked 500-metre path leads to the ruins. Thus, at this historical site, the focus is not only on the remains of the walls themselves, but also on specific details of the grounds and the route.

Nature

The western part of the Podzámčok municipal area extends into the Neresnica Valley. Beech forests grow on the western ridges of the Javorie Mountains, shaping the landscape around the village.

Traditions

The “Na sv. Jána” folk festival in Podzámčok has regional significance and preserves folk traditions and customs. At the “Na svätého Jána” festival, performances by children from Podzámčok and the Podzámočan folk group, as well as a bonfire, were scheduled for 20 June 2026; at the same time, it was announced as the 29th edition.

Every year, the Podzámočan folk group prepares programmes in which it presents dances, songs, customs and traditions from Podzámčok. It also presented the “Podzámocká svadba” programme at a nationwide showcase of village folklore in Likavka. Its repertoire also includes traditional songs from Podzámčok, as well as local traditions and costumes presented in thematic programmes.

Local character

The Church of St John the Baptist stands on a hill in the centre of Podzámčok and was consecrated on 16 November 2002. The wooden bell tower of Podzámčok stands on a hill near the Church of St John the Baptist and was built in 1868. It contains a rare late Baroque bell from 1782, made by the bell founder Ján Juraj Knobloch of Banská Bystrica.
