Culture and history

The Hrádok archaeological site is a hillfort with finds from the Eneolithic period, the Bronze Age, the Roman Imperial period, and the Early and High Middle Ages. Archaeological finds at Hrádok, including pottery from the Baden culture, also show that settlement in the cadastral territory of Lieskovec is significantly older than the written record. The first documented written mention of the cadastral territory dates from 1263 and appears in a charter issued by King Béla IV.

A more recent witness to the village’s history is Lieskovec’s present-day landmark, the bell tower dating from 1866. The Lieskovec bell tower is a late-classical masonry building with a square floor plan. Annual open-air film screenings were planned in the new amphitheater as part of the Lieskovec Cultural Summer.

Landscape

The cadastral territory of Lieskovec covers an area of 1,389 hectares in the Zvolen Basin. The volcanic Poľana Mountains shape the panorama of the Zvolen Basin. The area around Lieskovec contains numerous valleys and dense forests rich in fauna and flora. Springs are also part of the area’s character: Lieskovec has three mineral springs. Medokýš is located in the acacia grove in the Medokýšne Valley. It is a cold, hypotonic natural carbonated spring with an elevated silica content; local residents use it for drinking.
