The defining themes in Ostrá Lúka include church architecture, aristocratic history, archaeological sites and rural culture. Views of several landscape areas, as well as specific routes and events, complement the impressions visitors gain on site.

Culture and History

The Kostol Zjavenia Pána in Ostrá Lúka is a Gothic parish church whose origins date back to the end of the 13th century. The Kaštieľ Ostrolúckych served as the ancestral seat of the Ostrolúcky noble family. The foundations of the Kostol Zjavenia Pána church are also publicly accessible and form part of a tourist route that runs together with the Kaštieľ Ostrolúckych.

Further historical traces can be found in the cadastral area of Ostrá Lúka. Hrad Peťuša is an archaeological site dating from the 14th to the 15th century. At Hradisko Gunda, ramparts have been preserved, although their date has not been determined more precisely; it remains unclear whether they are connected with an older Bronze Age find. Majer Gunda preserves the ruins of Renaissance architecture built on the site of a medieval royal farmstead. Visible elements of the restored complex of an old church include its ground plan, surrounding walls and a new bell tower.

Landscape

From the entrance to Ostrá Lúka, there are views of the Boky state nature reserve, the Žiarska Valley, the Zvolen Basin, the Kremnica Mountains, the Low Tatras, Poľana and the strip of the Štiavnica Mountains. The view thus extends from a protected natural area and a valley across basin landscapes to several mountain ranges.

Routes and Events

The 7th stage of the Barborská cesta leads from Bacúrov to Ostrá Lúka along an asphalt road. Its route passes the Ostrolúcky family crypt, the Kaštieľ Ostrolúckych and Albergo Ostrá Lúka; it then continues along a field road and a forest track. The stage is described as moderately difficult to difficult.

The annual event “Svetelný signál” included Peťuša Castle, among other places, in the Banskobystrický Region. Ostrá Lúka also hosts the traditional cultural event Kultúrna Jar Adely Ostrolúckej; its 12th edition was held there on 21 May 2022.

Rural Culture and Regional Cuisine

The Múzeum vidieka presents rural life in Slovakia in the 19th and 20th centuries through original furniture, agricultural implements, folk costumes, a rural kitchen and a unique depiction of a village school. It also houses the largest collection on shepherd culture in Slovakia. The museum’s traditional activities include baking bread and cakes in a clay oven, as well as various folklore concerts.

The Múzeum vidieka hosted a public baking and tasting event featuring Ostrolúcka haruľa. It included a practical demonstration of preparing the dough and baking.
