Holiday apartment in Lehôtka: History and Slovak traditions

Lehôtka combines written history, village festivals and traditional dishes. The first written mention dates back to 1385. The village was established as early as the 14th century under the name Lehota through organized colonization carried out by the local population. The past before this period can also be traced: archaeological finds from the Stone Age and the Bronze Age have been discovered in the area of Lehôtka.

History

A special historical detail dates back to the second half of the 18th century. Lehôtka presumably had its own symbol engraved in its municipal seal for the first time; it depicted the outlines of a ploughshare and a sickle. The Slovenská izba is also located in the municipal office. It was opened on September 1, 2012, on the occasion of Dni obce – Lehôtská hostina.

Culture

In the centre of Lehôtka stands a bell tower with two bells, which were consecrated on September 14, 1924. The tower itself is a traditional folk-style masonry building with a square floor plan and features an onion dome dating from 1985. Several firmly established events form part of the village’s annual cycle. Dni obce – Lehôtská hostina is the largest event in Lehôtka and takes place every year on the first weekend of September. Its programme combines music, entertainment and sport. In May, Lehôtka also organizes a bonfire to mark Victory over Fascism Day. In February, the women’s club holds Páračky at the municipal office.

Cuisine

A dedicated day in October focuses on cuisine: at the annual event Deň zo zemiakov, kapusty a kysnutého cesta, traditional Slovak and homemade dishes are served to residents and visitors. Traditional dishes in Lehôtka included sour bean soups, Halušky filled with cabbage or bryndza, as well as Halušky with scrambled eggs and cracklings. Lokše and potato Nálesníky are also served. Traditional home-slaughtered foods include Jaternice, Serikaše, Klobásy, bacon and ham, as well as other smoked meats.

Landscape

Lehôtka lies in the northwestern part of the Lučenec Basin, in the valley of the Tuhársky stream, at an elevation of 267 metres. On the western edge of the Lučenec Basin, the village lies at the confluence of the headwaters of the Mašková stream. The western part of Lehôtka is covered by oak forests; brown forest soils and illimerized soils can be found there, and the area is also home to forest and field game.

No marked cycling or hiking route passes directly through Lehôtka. However, several cycling routes run through nearby Halič.
