Nature and trails

The Žakýlske pleso natural monument is located in the municipal territory of Podhorie in the Banská Štiavnica District and also belongs to the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Podhorie is also home to the educational trail Instructive Path to the Richňavské Lakes. The trail comprises 16 stations with information panels and covers natural, mining-related and historical topics. Another educational trail is dedicated to Žakýlske pleso: its nine information panels provide information about the landscape, culture and history of Podhorie.

The route and local parking options are also clearly indicated. The circular trail begins and ends at the bus stop. In the centre of Podhorie, parking is available in parking areas next to the bus stop, the municipal office or the post office. An annual hiking event held in March is the Výstup na Žakýlsky hrad, which the municipality organises on a Sunday around St George’s Day.

Culture and history

About 1.5 km north of Podhorie lies Žakýlsky hrad, also called Pustý hrad, on Brezový vrch at an elevation of 812 m above sea level. At Žakýlsky hrad, entrances to two mine adits can be seen; they are 5 and 19 m long, respectively.

A puppet exhibition in the amphitheatre building in Podhorie displays more than 30 puppets made of wood, textiles and jute. The natural amphitheatre in Podhorie also serves as a venue for cultural events. The Podhorčan folklore group was founded in 1972. The Folklórne slávnosti Podhorie featured performances by folklore groups, folk music ensembles, instrumentalists, singing groups, solo singers, and dancing children and adults.

The parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and St Elizabeth in Podhorie was built in 1718. Its nave is a simple Baroque structure with a semicircular termination and pointed-arch windows in Gothic form. In addition, several original stone houses with cellars from the 19th century have been preserved in Podhorie.

The F. R. Osvald Memorial Room is located in the local parish house; its exhibition is open to the public. The Folk Museum in Podhorie is located in the Žakýl district. Part of its exhibition documents the hard life of farmers in the past century through furniture, tools and equipment. The exhibition of the Folk Museum in Podhorie is open to the public. Also open to the public are the memorial plaque to J. Horák, the stone tombs of the Osvald family and the Chapel of St J. Nepomuk.
