Holiday apartment in Ilija at Sitno: Nature and History

Ilija is located directly in the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area and at the northern foot of the Sitno massif in the Štiavnica Mountains. The summit of Sitno lies within the cadastral area of Ilija. This brings protected landscapes, marked trails and notable historic buildings together within a close geographical area.

Nature

The natural area includes the Pralesy Slovenska–Sitno Nature Reserve, which encompasses parcels in the cadastral area of Ilija. Its conservation objectives include beech and beech-fir flower forests of European importance. The protected area provides a habitat for rare and protected species. The Sitno locality also forms part of the Natura 2000 site SKUEV0216.

Another protected area is the Sitno National Nature Reserve. It extends into the southwest of the municipality of Ilija. A tourist-marked route runs within reach of the western edge of the Sitno primeval forest locality. The geographical connections thus extend from the immediate municipal area to the protected areas around Sitno.

Things to Do

The Andrej Kmeť educational trail was established in the territory of Ilija. From Ilija, there is also a 4.3-kilometre route that is marked green at first and then blue. The walking time is two hours. The summit of Sitno is also part of the local area: a renovated wooden lookout tower dating from 1727 stands there. The lookout tower houses an information centre for nature conservation, which is open to the public from May to September.

The educational trail is designed as an educational route, while the other trail is characterised by its length, sequence of colours and walking time.

History and Buildings

The year 1266 is considered the beginning of Ilija's documented history. Sitno Castle was built in the 13th century on the site of a prehistoric fortified settlement. Since the beginning of the 18th century, Sitno Castle has been a ruin.

Another historic building is located directly in Ilija: the Church of Saint Giles is a Romanesque church from the first half of the 13th century. It stands on a slope above Ilija and is not enclosed by a fence. Its portal is late Romanesque and decorated with ornaments featuring plant and animal motifs. The history of the locality is thus reflected both in written records and in the castle complex and a religious building with distinctive details.
