Holiday apartment in Dekýš: Hiking between forests and lakes

Dekýš is conveniently located for hiking and retains its peaceful character throughout the year. Hiking trails run through the village towards Sitno, Počúvadlo and the surrounding lakes. This connects the village’s location with a landscape where nature, bodies of water and historical traces lie closely alongside one another.

Nature

Dekýš lies in the southern part of the Štiavnické vrchy, in an erosion-formed depression at the headwaters of the Dekýšsky potok. Three quarters of the cadastral area are covered by forest. The forests in the Dekýš area are characteristically composed of oak and beech stands, while the area around the village features a mixed flora of mountain plants and heat-loving species.

Near Dekýš, 4 km southwest of the village, lies the Jabloňovský Roháč state forest reserve, also called Almášsky Roháč. Red deer occur in the surroundings of Dekýš; the Sitno roe deer (Capreolus sitnensis) lives in the Sitno Nature Reserve. These two statements refer to different areas: red deer occur in the surroundings of Dekýš, while the Sitno roe deer is associated with the Sitno Nature Reserve.

Water and landscape

Počúvadlianske Lake is the largest lake in the Štiavnické vrchy. It was created according to plans by S. Mikovíny between 1738 and 1740. The lakes around Dekýš were mostly artificially created for ore mining and have historical and technical value. The bodies of water therefore represent not only the landscape, but also the traditional connection between water engineering and mining.

Culture

Traditional folk art in Dekýš included the production of agricultural tools and furniture from locally available wood. The village’s embroidery also preserves its own development: at first, small cross, lattice and dot motifs were used; after the First World War, plant ornaments were added.

A written record dates from 1270. Dekýš was first mentioned at that time and was then known by the name Gukes. A settlement of the Linear Pottery culture was already known in the Stone Age in the area of Dekýš; it included Želiezovce-type pottery and an idol find. A settlement from the Roman period is also known in the village’s area.

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Dekýš was built in 1805 and extended with a transept in 1924. It is in good condition and is used for its religious purpose. The Evangelical church in Dekýš was built in 1924 in a neoclassical style influenced by the Secession. It too is in good condition and is used for its religious purpose.
