Štiavnické Bane combines mining, water management and sacred architecture through specific sites and trails. The Piargsky chodník is a 5.3 km-long educational trail with nine information boards. It presents the area's most important mining structures, including shafts and adits, as well as ore processing.
Trails and Water Management
The Piargsky vodohospodársky systém educational trail explains the uniqueness of the mining and water management system at 16 stations in one part of the Piarg group of reservoirs. The Piargsky water management educational trail has a long route of 15,110 m with an elevation gain of 100 m and a short route of 10,350 m with an elevation gain of 85 m. Those who prefer a shorter or longer route can compare both variants directly.
The Ökológia piargskych tajchov educational trail presents the biological environment and the related water quality of selected reservoirs at five stations. Its starting point is at the main dam of the Veľká Richňava reservoir. The educational trail can be completed on foot in two to three hours. Length, elevation gain and walking time provide different reference points for planning the timing of a day.
Culture and Sacred Sites
The Church of Saint Joseph and the associated monastery complex were built in Vindšachta between 1735 and 1754. The church is a single-nave Baroque church with a projecting tower; a two-storey monastery building adjoins it on the north side. Its organ was built in 1754, and the renowned organ builder Martin Podkonický is probably considered its builder.
The Kalvarie Štiavnické Bane–Horná Roveň has six stations dating from 1754 and leads to a crucifixion group dating from 1730. The municipal heritage reserve of Štiavnické Bane is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Town of Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity”. This World Heritage Site also includes the municipal heritage reserve of Banská Štiavnica and the protected historic zone of Hodruša-Hámre.
Geopark and Reservoirs
The municipality of Štiavnické Bane lies wholly or partly within the core zone of the Banská Štiavnica Geopark.
The Veľká Windšachtská reservoir was built between 1712 and 1715 and is one of the first four reservoirs in the area of present-day Štiavnické Bane. It currently serves recreational purposes. The reservoir is an inseparable part of the unique Banská Štiavnica water management system, which has been preserved locally in an authentic form and in its original extent, with only minor local disturbances or damage.
