Holiday apartment in Žarnovica: Churches, castle history and speedway
Žarnovica combines sacred buildings, medieval castle history, wildlife observation and a strong speedway tradition. Between the originally Gothic Church of St Peter and Paul, the Žarnovický kaštieľ and Revište Castle, a multifaceted picture of the town emerges, shaped as much by historical details as by current events and sporting activities.
Culture
The originally Gothic Roman Catholic Church of St Peter and Paul in Žarnovica was built around 1400. Its tower has a Gothic core with a Renaissance superstructure and pairs of sound openings in the style of a campanile. The church also contains a portal from the ruins of the Revište castle chapel. It is decorated with intersecting rods, diamond-shaped bases and two mascarons.
Another sacred building is the Neo-Gothic Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was built in Žarnovica in 1894. A Way of the Cross with 14 stations was laid out at this chapel at the beginning of the 21st century.
History
The Žarnovický kaštieľ is a building dating from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. According to historical sources, it was built in 1490 by Filip Dóczy, probably on the older foundations of a fortified castle. The presumably originally medieval Gothic castle at the Žarnovický kaštieľ served as an outwork of Revište Castle. In 1575, a meeting of seven mining towns took place at the Žarnovický kaštieľ. The meeting agreed to send a delegation to Vienna to ask the emperor for help against the Turks.
The ruins of Revište Castle are located in Revištské Podzámčie, a district of Žarnovica. Its oldest written mention dates from 1331. The castle stands on a rocky andesite spur on the right bank of the Hron. The “Owners of Revište Castle” educational trail was established in August 2012 and comprises eight panels depicting the castle lords and providing a brief history of the castle.
Nature and activities
In Revištské Podzámčie, Zveropark offers the opportunity to observe interesting animals. The wildlife thus complements the district’s historic sites with an experience area of its own, without the town being limited to a single theme.
The Žarnovický plochodrážny štadión is located in the municipal sports complex and has a 400-metre speedway track with a dolomite surface. The “Plochá dráha detí” event has been organised by Speedway Club Žarnovica practically since the club’s beginnings. The Speedway Academy provides all interested parties with motorcycles, spare parts and riding gear free of charge.
The history of motorsport events is also present: The 62nd edition of the “Zlatá prilba SNP” event was approaching.
Žarnovica has had a railway station since 1896. The same overarching destination area also includes Veľké Pole, Nová Baňa, Voznica, Tekovská Breznica, Horné Hámre, Hrabičov, Malá Lehota and Rudno Nad Hronom.
To the overarching travel overview: Scharnowitz.
