Malá Lehota combines striking natural monuments, sacred buildings and a vibrant bagpipe tradition. The Vojšín Educational Trail leads through this distinctive local landscape, while historic buildings, remote settlement areas and regularly held events reveal further facets of the village.

Nature

The Vojšín Educational Trail connects the Starohutský vodopád National Monument in the cadastral area of Nová Baňa with the Andezitové kamenné more National Nature Monument in the cadastral area of Malá Lehota. The route can be walked in both directions, is moderately challenging and is 10.5 km long. Eight information panels or stops accompany the trail and structure its thematic sections.

The Andezitové kamenné more National Nature Monument was designated in 1975, covers 1.4 hectares and lies in the cadastral area of the municipality of Malá Lehota in the Žarnovica District, in the Tribeč Mountains. It was formed by the disintegration of a lava flow into column-like fragments. At Andezitové kamenné more, there is a viewing point with a screen; next to it stands a bus shelter built in the same design.

The natural features of the area also include Jazvinská Cave, also known as Debnárova Cave. It lies near the Debnárov štál settlement in the municipality of Malá Lehota in the Tribeč Mountains and extends horizontally 44 m into a limestone massif. The cave serves as a wintering site for bats and is therefore closed from the end of October until March.

Culture

The Neoclassical Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built in 1820 in Štál Domčeky. Its old nave has a barrel vault. Between Štál Adamcovým and Štál Udičkovým stands a masonry wayside chapel built around 1955.

A memorial to the victims of the First and Second World Wars stands in the local cemetery; it was erected in 1946. The church, wayside chapel and cemetery memorial are therefore among the historic buildings and commemorative sites of Malá Lehota mentioned above.

Malá Lehota is one of three rural municipalities in the dispersed settlement area of Nová Baňa. The remote settlement areas are called “štále”. This term shapes the description of the settlement structure as well as the names Štál Domčeky, Debnárov štál, Štál Adamcovým and Štál Udičkovým.

Events and traditions

The ZETOR 25 CUP is a regularly held event in Malá Lehota featuring races of historic Zetor 25 tractors.

Gajdošské fašiangy is considered the oldest bagpipe festival in Slovakia and takes place in Malá Lehota, Veľká Lehota and Jedľové Kostoľany. Under the name “Bagpipes Carnival”, Malá Lehota also hosts an international gathering of bagpipe players and bagpipe music. It begins on the last Friday before Ash Wednesday.
