Nature and Trails

The Kľakovskou dolinou educational trail is 32 kilometres long and runs through Ostrý Grúň. It was created by the municipalities of Kľak, Ostrý Grúň and Hrabičov along the route of a disused forest railway. In winter, the same educational trail is also used as a cross-country ski track. A yellow-marked hiking trail from Ostrý Grúň is one of the routes to the summit of Vtáčnik; hiking trails to this summit often begin in the village.

The Pokutský Waterfall is located in the immediate vicinity of Ostrý Grúň and is a protected natural monument in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. It can be reached from the southern edge of the village via a mostly asphalt road along the Pokutský Stream. This means that, in addition to the longer trails through the valley, there are also clearly defined destinations close to the village.

Cycling

The national cycling route register lists Route 2596 Hrad Revište–Ostrý Grúň–Píla, which is 31.7 kilometres long. The blue-marked Ostrý Grúň–Píla cycling route is 19 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 880 metres. It is intended for experienced mountain-bike or e-bike riders. A cycling route to Revište Castle leads from the centre of Ostrý Grúň, first towards Hrabičov, and then turns into the Pokutská Valley. The blue-marked Ostrý Grúň–Píla cycling route begins at the Chapel of Panny Márie in Ostrý Grúň.

Culture and History

In the lower part of Ostrý Grúň stands the Pomník umučených občanov memorial at the site where inhabitants were murdered on 21 January 1945. The memorial is a national cultural monument. The Ostrý Grúň Memorial Room was reopened in 2005 in cooperation with the SNP Museum in Banská Bystrica and is located next to the municipal office.

The Ostrogrúnska ostrá kosa is also part of local cultural life. A round of this hand-mowing competition is held regularly in the meadows above Ostrý Grúň as part of the Slovak hand-mowing league. The hand-mowing and cultural event was held for the first time on 10 June 2006; the Ostrogrúnska ostrá kosa also offers a short mowing course.

The Vtáčnik singing ensemble was founded in Ostrý Grúň on 5 May 2008. It strives to remain actively involved so that the customs of its ancestors stay alive and plans to focus on folklore. Other visible cultural traces include the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a vernacular Classical-style building from the late 18th century, and a sculpture of a mother with a child from 1954 in front of the municipal office of Ostrý Grúň.

The Pokuty earth bridge, the best-preserved structure along this educational trail, is located on the “Po stopách lesnej železnice Kľakovskou dolinou” educational trail. A plaque on its gable bears the inscription “STAVĚNO 1926”, indicating that it was built in 1926.
