Breznica Castle was a relatively extensive castle above Tekovská Breznica dating from the second half of the 13th century, built by the Archbishop of Esztergom. The remains of the walls of the castle core are visible at Breznica Castle. The ruins of Breznica Castle are registered as an immovable national cultural monument in the Central List of the Slovak Monument Fund under number ÚZPF 1273.

Culture

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is the oldest monument in Tekovská Breznica. It was built in the 14th century in the Romanesque style on elevated ground above the municipality. An extension enlarged the church in 1912–1913; it was extensively reconstructed in 1993.

Only the perimeter walls of the square tower remain at Watchtower Luchtov. It probably served as a defensive and signal tower to warn the population and the castle guards. There is no signposted path to Watchtower Luchtov; access is relatively difficult.

Nature

In the surrounding area, Putikov vŕšok documents the most recent volcanic activity in Slovakia and features a volcanic exhalative channel. Putikov vŕšok is also a protected natural monument in the surrounding area, covering 21.06 hectares and designated in 1996.

In the surrounding area, Sesame Cave is a 26-metre-long volcanic vent on Putikov vŕšok. During an eruption, volcanic gases escape through it. Another distinctive landform is Sokolia skala: the rock face lies at an elevation of 415 metres above sea level southeast of Tekovská Breznica, above the ruins of Breznica Castle at Tomanovom rígli.

Getting around

The marked green hiking trail to Breznica Castle leads from Tekovská Breznica railway station through the village. The educational trail to the ruins of Breznica Castle is a less steep alternative to this hiking trail and leads to a viewpoint near the ruins. Thus, two differently described routes to the same historic destination run alongside each other: the green hiking trail through Tekovská Breznica and the educational trail as a less steep alternative.

Region

The eastern part of the cadastral territory of Tekovská Breznica lies within the protected zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity”.
