Nová Baňa combines impressive evidence of mining with religious cultural monuments, diverse educational trails and places by the water. Between historic buildings, viewpoints and marked paths, the city and its surroundings offer a varied experience.
Culture
One special place is the Kalvária in Nová Baňa. This national cultural monument comprises 17 protected structures: the Calvary hill, the Church of the Holy Cross, the Chapel of the Suffering Christ and fourteen Stations of the Cross chapels. Religious processions and masses continue to take place regularly on the site. At the same time, it serves as a resting place in nature with views of Nová Baňa. The Stations of the Cross lead from the foot of Záhrb Hill to the Church of the Holy Cross at the summit.
The Pohronie Museum also offers an introduction to the town's history. It was founded in 1952 and is housed in the former town hall, originally a four-storey Gothic building from the second half of the 14th century. The building was renovated in the mid-18th century and is now protected as a cultural monument. More than 12,000 collection items include archaeological finds and evidence of mining, crafts and folk production, including pottery, glassmaking and woodcarving. The historic building stock also includes an originally Gothic Roman Catholic church, built in the second half of the 14th century and rebuilt after its destruction between 1725 and 1729. The Hospital Church is likewise a protected cultural monument and is one of the oldest architectural monuments in Nová Baňa. Its construction in 1391 was closely connected with the adjacent hospital.
Mining and trails
The mining educational trail consists of two historically themed circular routes: the black route is 4.3 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 210 metres, while the green route measures 5.6 kilometres and has an elevation difference of 130 metres. The restored Trojkráľová mine adit offers another insight into the history of mining. It was ceremonially opened on 26 September 2008 and was undoubtedly one of the most productive adits in the historic gold mining industry of Nová Baňa.
The Zvonička educational trail passes several distinctive landscape features: Zvonička, Červená skala, Havrania skala, Háj and Kohútovo. The trail is 6,233 metres long and has an elevation difference of 274 metres. A yellow-marked hiking route leads from the railway station in Nová Baňa to the Zvonička educational trail. In the Zvonička recreational area, there is a children's playground with a swing set and other play elements, as well as a fire pit. The “Zvonička” via ferrata sector consists of several rock formations connected by bridges and climbing routes.
Mountain bikers can take the “Bajkom okolo Novej Bane” circular route. It can be ridden in both directions and is classified as moderately difficult to difficult in terms of fitness and technique on the descents. The route is 39.4 kilometres long and involves 1,300 metres of ascent.
Nature
The Háj lookout tower has three viewing platforms. From there, views extend over the Nová Baňa Basin, the Pohronský Inovec ridge and part of the Danubian Lowland.
At the Tajch reservoir, relaxation is combined with sport fishing. The recreational infrastructure includes safe water access points and a wooden footbridge on the right bank. From there, the Zbojnícke studničky educational trail leads via Šarvíz to Kohútovo. It connects springs, water-management structures and a wetland; nine themed stations provide information about springs, the water cycle and the importance of the forest. The educational trail can be walked in both directions, is accessible year-round and is easy. It is approximately 10 kilometres long and takes about 2.5 hours.
Another landscape destination is the Starohutský Waterfall. It is located about 300 metres north of the settlement of Stará Huta, a district of Nová Baňa, and has a 5-metre-high waterfall drop.
