In Tarusskiy District, literary history, visual art and architecture come together. Tarusa offers museums and cultural sites associated with Marina Tsvetaeva, Konstantin Paustovsky and artists whose lives and work were closely connected with the town. Barjatino Estate offers a different focus, with its manor house, church and historic park. When planning your trip, it is therefore helpful to consider whether you would rather explore collections and cultural events or architectural history and park design.

Art and Literature in Tarusa

The Tarusskiy Museum of the Tsvetaev Family displays materials about Marina Tsvetaeva and her family. At the K. G. Paustovsky House Museum, the original domestic interior from the 1950s and 1960s has been recreated; the writer’s personal belongings and his fully reconstructed study are also part of the museum. The two houses offer different perspectives: one focuses on Tsvetaeva and her family, the other on Paustovsky’s home life and workspace.

The main exhibition at the Tarusskaya Art Gallery features Russian art by artists of the 18th to 20th centuries whose lives and work were closely connected with Tarusa. At the Eduard Steinberg Museum Studio, the artist’s workspace has been preserved in its original state. Art and the town’s history are also brought together at the Tarusskiy Museum of Local Lore: its exhibitions are housed in the former home of the second-guild merchant Poznyakov, an architectural landmark dating from the second half of the 19th century.

The Writers’ House in Tarusa hosts concerts, presentations, performances and exhibitions. A local chamber orchestra and guest artists perform in the large hall. Large windows and a grand piano are among the hall’s features, giving the venue its own architectural character.

Barjatino Estate: Architectural History and Park

Barjatino Estate in the village of Barjatino is a cultural heritage site of regional significance. Its two-storey manor house was built in two phases: Prince A. M. Golitsyn had the northern section built in the late 18th century; Prince D. S. Gorchakov added the southern extension in the 1870s. The estate also includes a two-storey steward’s house in the Classical style, dating from the first half of the 19th century. The corner tower, balcony, staircase and orangery of the manor house have been lost.

The park combines landscape and formal layouts and has a mix of tree species. It was laid out in the late 18th century and completed in the second half of the 19th century. The estate also has a restored Church of the Dormition, built in 1850 and featuring Gothic elements. The manor house, steward’s house, park and church each add their own perspective to the architectural and garden history of the site.

Collections and Special Visitor Experiences

The museum in Tarusa displays objects from the 19th to 21st centuries that illustrate the Soviet and pre-Soviet eras. At Rakitsky, the house museum and arboretum garden offer tastings of aromatic tea made from plants and herbs gathered in the garden. Check the current arrangements for this offering before your visit.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide what you would like to focus on culturally: Tarusa centres on literature, art and events, while Barjatino is particularly associated with its estate, church and park design. This lets you choose a base that suits your travel plans without reducing all the experiences to a single focus.
