Linden and spruce avenues, a former estate, and exhibitions on history and nature shape the distinctive travel experiences in Medyn District. Peredel focuses on parkland and estate history; Medyn adds a historical perspective with a museum featuring six exhibition halls. Other highlights include a church ruin in Ilinka and guided tours covering a wide range of subjects—from a film set to milk processing.

Peredel Estate: Parkland and Industrial History

The Park Peredelskiy nature park in Peredel was designated a natural monument on April 26, 1990, and covers 3.6 hectares. It consists of linden and spruce avenues, whose design combines landscape and formal elements. The park was once part of an estate. Its ordered layout is thus combined with landscaping that brings different forms together.

Peredel Estate itself also offers concrete insights into local history. It includes a two-storey main house in the Classical style, dating from the third quarter of the 19th century. The estate was founded by the industrialists Batashevy. They initially established linen production there, which was later converted to match manufacturing. The architecture and production history complement one another: the main house illustrates the style of a later building period, while the shift from linen to matches reveals a change in the estate’s history.

Exhibitions and History in Medyn

In September 2012, the Medynsky District Museum and Exhibition Centre opened in a new building in Medyn. It has six exhibition halls. Exhibitions include the Zal Boyevoy i Trudovoy Slavy (Hall of Military and Labour Glory), about the Great Patriotic War, as well as displays on the history and nature of Medyn District and the War of 1812. Several perspectives come together under one roof: regional history, nature, and remembrance of different periods of war.

The centre also holds workshops intended to foster visitors’ creative potential. Those interested in exhibitions can see this hands-on approach as another facet of Medyn’s culture. The workshops and exhibition themes serve different purposes: one offers a creative activity, while the other covers historical and natural history topics.

Ilinka and the Traces of the Estate

The neighbouring village of Ilinka has almost grown together with Peredel. It is home to the ruined Ilyinskaya tserkov (Church of Elijah). Dating from 1765, it was rebuilt in the mid-19th century. Numerous old, toppled tombstones lie beside the church, including those of A. I. Batashev and I. A. Lashchagin, owners of Peredel Estate. The church building and tombstones thus connect two different historical traces: the village’s architectural history and the names of people associated with the estate.

Guided Experiences: Film Set and Dairy Plant

The Voenfilm cinema complex in Medyn includes an outdoor set with large-scale scenery depicting a village from the time of the Great Patriotic War. The site also features a dug-out river filled with water. A guided tour offers a chance to see, among other things, equipment from that period. Confirm visitor arrangements before your trip if you are planning a visit.

A guided tour of the EkoNiva dairy plant in Ulanovo offers a different kind of insight. It covers the plant’s history, the production of milk and fermented milk products, and quality control. Visitors see the bottling process and take part in a workshop and tasting. It is advisable to check the latest visitor arrangements when planning your visit. Unlike the film set, the focus here is on food processing rather than a historical backdrop.

When looking for a holiday rental in Medyn District, you could first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your trip: estate history and park design, exhibitions and workshops, or guided insights into film equipment and milk processing. These different focuses can help you define your travel plans without combining the places and experiences into a single itinerary.
