Kaluga Oblast offers a wide variety of reasons to travel: a marked route along several rivers, land art, wildlife and plant life, or museums covering space exploration and regional history. When planning, it helps to decide on your main focus first. This makes it easier to match the places you want to visit with the location of your holiday rental.

Nature on the Great Kaluga Trail

The Great Kaluga Trail is 245 kilometres long, marked, and runs along the Ugra, Oka and Zhizdra rivers. You can explore it on foot, by kayak or by bicycle and experience the nature of Ugra National Park; sections of the route lie within the national park. Information boards and signposts help you determine your location and the distance to the nearest settlement. When planning your stages, check the current waymarking; entry rules may apply for visits to the national park.

The educational tours in the Kaluzhskie Zaseki State Nature Reserve offer another way to explore nature. They are organised year-round and range from short introductory tours and several-hour hikes across uneven terrain to photography and combined tours. Which option suits your stay depends on whether you are planning a brief overview or more time for a hike. Confirm the specific arrangements with the reserve in advance.

Land Art, Festivals and Discoveries

At Nikola-Lenivets Art Park, the focus is on landscape installations and land art by Russian and international artists. Many of these are considered defining works of contemporary art. The Arkhstoyanie festival is usually held there every year in late July. The programme includes new artworks, performances, concerts, lectures and workshops. Individual programme items may vary from year to year; check the dates if you want to plan your visit around the festival.

A different range of themes awaits you at ETNOMIR, a cluster for ethnic, ecological, educational and rural tourism. Since 2008, a miniature model of the diverse human world has been taking shape across 140 hectares. Alongside birds and other animals, Vorobyi Bird Park features an ostrich farm, a small-animal farm, and collections of minerals and butterflies. Check which facilities are currently available before your visit.

Museums of Nature, Space Exploration and History

In Kaluga, the Usadba Zolotarevykh Museum Complex uses colourful dioramas and biological groups to show the region’s plant and animal life through the changing seasons. The history section occupies eleven halls on the second floor. The K. E. Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics spans a different period, covering Russian space exploration from the first artificial Earth satellite to modern long-duration orbital stations. In Kaluga, the changing seasons in nature and the history of space exploration are presented side by side as distinct museum themes.

In Kozelsk, the archaeological collection at the Tsyplakov House ranges from the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic through the Bronze and Early Iron Ages to the early Middle Ages, as well as the periods of the Slavs and Ancient Rus. The Svyato-Vvedenskaya Kozelskaya Optina Pustyn Monastery also offers a historical perspective: it is one of the oldest monasteries, and the relics of the Optina Elders in the monastery churches are considered its most important shrine. The Elders are associated with a spiritual revival in Russia in the 19th century. Numerous works of Russian literature are connected with the monastery; Nikolai Gogol, Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky had particular ties to it.

The Medyn District Museum and Exhibition Centre opened in September 2012 in a new building with six exhibition halls. It hosts masterclasses, concerts and other cultural events; check the dates if you are planning to attend an event. The Podvorye Masterov Museum in Polotnyany Zavod displays works by local folk artisans, made using traditional and more modern techniques, including 3D-printed installations. In Polotnyany Zavod, you can also book a theatrical tour, take a boat ride on the Shukhodrev and see the estate complex from the water. Check in advance whether these activities are available on your dates.

Plan Your Stay to Suit You

When choosing a holiday rental, it makes a difference whether your trip will focus mainly on the trail and nature tours or on the art park, festival and museums. For a trip centred on Arkhstoyanie, dates and the programme are important planning points; for the trail, consider your chosen mode of transport, the waymarking and, where applicable, the national park’s entry rules.
