In Zhukovskiy District, memorial sites commemorating the War of 1812 meet historic architecture, museums with unusual themes and seasonal activities. Tarutino draws attention to the Napoleonic era; in Troitskoye, Dashkova’s history and a significant cultural heritage site come into focus. These include a museum devoted to environmental issues and art, and Vorobji Bird Park, with animal areas and a range of activities. These different highlights give you a concrete basis for shaping your stay around the experiences that interest you most.

Tarutino: Remembrance of 1812

The Monument to Russian Military Glory in Tarutino was ceremonially unveiled in 1834 in memory of the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812. The grounds of the Tarutino Memorial also include a redan from the Tarutino camp. This means that a monument dedicated specifically to the victory and a structural remnant of the camp stand at the same memorial site.

The exhibition at the Tarutino Museum Complex focuses on the Russian army’s Tarutino maneuver in October 1812. It halted Napoleon’s advance toward Kaluga and Russia’s wealthy southern governorates. While the monument commemorates the victory, the exhibition focuses on the specific maneuver and its historical impact.

Dashkova and Troitskoye

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Troitskoye dates from 1765 and was built in the Baroque style to a design by E. R. Dashkova. The burial place of Princess E. R. Dashkova is in a side chapel. Architecture and personal history come together here: the E. R. Dashkova Memorial Museum in Kremyonki focuses on Dashkova’s life and her role in education and science in the second half of the 18th century.

The Vorontsova-Dashkova Estate is also in Troitskoye. It is a cultural heritage site of federal significance and comprises a church, stone gates, two outbuildings, an obelisk and a park. However, little of the 18th-century estate remains. Together, the listed features and the note about its limited state of preservation convey a nuanced picture of this historic site.
