Bănești: Wooden Church and Nicolae Bălcescu Museum Complex
Bănești is located on the high hill of Dealul Băneștilor; the village of Bănești was recorded on a Russian map in 1853.
Culture and History
The village of Bănești is home to a wooden church and a paraklis. In the municipality of Nicolae Bălcescu, the Nicolae Bălcescu Museum Complex is considered a pilgrimage destination for those interested in history.
The Nicolae Bălcescu Museum Complex includes the 18th-century Adormirea Maicii Domnului wooden church, which was moved here from Gâltofani in 1973. The Nicolae Bălcescu Museum Complex also includes the Bălceștilor Manor House, a historic monument from the 19th and 20th centuries.
More than 12,500 cultural and cultural heritage objects belong to the collections of the Nicolae Bălcescu Museum Complex. The collections displayed in the manor house of the museum complex convey the atmosphere of the era and portray the Romanian Revolution of 1848.
The chronological span of these testimonies extends from the 18th to the 20th century. The history of the ensemble also includes the relocation of the wooden church from Gâltofani in 1973. The manor house thus preserves a site connected with the events of 1821 and, at the same time, with the collections on the Romanian Revolution of 1848.
The manor house’s historical associations extend beyond its architectural history. During the revolutionary movement of 1821, it served as a refuge for the Otetelișanu family. It is also associated with the childhood of Petrache Poenaru and with the attack by the Arnăuți under Iova and Ineciu.
Petrache Poenaru, who was born on January 10, 1799, in Bănești in Vâlcea County, received French patent 3208 on May 25, 1827, for a self-inking fountain pen.
Petrache Poenaru spent his childhood in the Bănești manor house; there, he was responsible for warning of attacks by the Arnăuți from the bell tower.
During the revolutionary movement of 1821, the Otetelișanu family retreated to the Bănești-Vâlcea manor house, not far from the village of Otetelișu. The Bănești manor house was attacked during the 1821 uprising by insurgent Arnăuți under the command of Captains Iova and Ineciu.
Excursions and Traditions
