Geographical Setting

Lazaret is located on the DN7 in the Olt Valley. Near Lazaret, the Lotrioara stream flows into the Olt River. The connection between Boița and Lazaret runs via the DN7 and the E81 along the same transport corridor. The geographical reference thus remains closely connected to the Olt Valley and the confluence of the Lotrioara.

History on the Olt

During the plague epidemic of 1660–1661, a lazaretto was established at the confluence of the Lotrioara stream and the Olt River for quarantine purposes. From the 18th century onward, the quarantine facility was relocated 9 km south of Turnu-Roșu, to the confluence of the Lotrioara stream and the Olt River, at the place known as “Lazaret.” The historic railway through the Olt Valley ran through Lazaret, which is referred to as the Turnu Roșu lazaretto. The historical information therefore names two points in time: its establishment during the plague epidemic of 1660–1661 and its subsequent relocation from the 18th century onward.
