Obârşia Lotrului is a tourist complex in the Lotru Valley. The place lies at the meeting point of the Latoriței, Parâng and Șureanu Mountains. From Obârşia Lotrului, you can access the Transalpina. During the warmer months, you can continue along this road to Rânca or Petroșani. The mountain road described therefore connects the place with two different directions in the alpine surroundings.

Culture

At an altitude of around 1,400 m lies the „Sfinții Martiri Brâncoveni“ Monastery. It is located on the DN7A in the Obârşia Lotrului mountain resort. The monastery includes a wooden church in the Maramureș style. This style is typical of the area around Borșa. The wooden church is shaped like a Byzantine cross. The approximate elevation places the monastery geographically within the mountain resort; at the same time, the DN7A indicates its location on a specific mountain road.

An important hiking trail from Obârşia Lotrului leads to Lacul Gâlcescu and onwards to the mountain ridge. At the mountain ridge, it meets a trail marked with a red stripe. The different markings distinguish the described trail sections by their colors. A walking time of 12 to 13 hours is indicated for the route from Cabana Obârşia Lotrului to Cabana Obârşia Lotrului. This walking time identifies the described route as a time-intensive tour. The route from Cabana Obârşia Lotrului to Petroșani begins on the alpine road in the direction of Mount Tărtărău.

Sports

The Transalpina ski area is located at an altitude of 1,350 m at its base. A cable car leads from there to around 1,800 m. A ski lift then ascends to 2,000 m at Vârful Bora. The elevation sequence describes the ascent in two stages: first by cable car, followed by the ski lift. At Domeniul Transalpina, there are easy and difficult mountain biking trails across the alpine pasture. These trails are connected to the strategic road or the Transalpina. The cable car makes the ascent easier and facilitates access to the starting points of the various trails.
