Discover Topolog: Nature, Culture and History

The Topolog stream rises near the village of Topolog in the Podișul Casimcei. Both steppe and forest-steppe vegetation occur in the Topolog area; steppe predominates in the south and southwest, while forest-steppe predominates in the north and northeast. The administrative area of Topolog commune overlaps with the protected landscape area ROSCI0201 Podișul Nord Dobrogean. The Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca) is one of the species of Community, national or nature conservation interest recorded in the administrative area of Topolog.

Culture

The Schitul Înălțarea Sfintei Cruci is designated as a local destination in Topolog. The Schitul Înălțarea Sfintei Cruci and Sf. Vasile is located in the Vraja forest area of Topolog commune. The church of the Schitul Înălțarea Sfintei Cruci and Sf. Vasile was built between 2001 and April 2002. The two iconostases of this Schitul were made by the priest Valcu Vasile.

The paraklis of the Schitul Înălțarea Sfintei Cruci and Sf. Vasile received wood in 2001 from the trunk of an elm tree in which the shape of a clearly visible Holy Cross had been discovered. The hramul of the church of Sf. Constantin și Elena is associated with 21 May, while the hramul of the church of Sf. Dumitru is associated with 26 October. The local Sărbătoarea fermierului in Topolog and the hramul of the village of Topolog are associated with the BUJORELUL vocal ensemble from Topolog.

Music and Festivals

The BUJORELUL vocal ensemble from Topolog was founded in spring 2021 to preserve and promote Romanian traditional culture.

Archaeology

The TOP 33 archaeological site is located on the left bank of the Topolog valley, in the immediate vicinity of Schitul Topolog. The Roman-period settlement TOP 161 lies southwest of Topolog on a plateau near the valley of the Topolog stream. The Roman-period rural settlement TOP 26 is located approximately 500 metres northwest of Schitul Topolog, on the right bank of the Topolog valley. The Neolithic settlement TOP 37 lies on a plateau at the northwestern edge of Topolog, near the wind farm.

The TOP 31 archaeological site is located southeast of Schitul Topolog, on the left bank of the Topolog valley. The prehistoric settlement TOP 20 lies northeast of Topolog on a plateau bordered to the south and east by two small watercourses. The Villa rustica de la Topolog – Stejarul lui Dobrică is located outside the built-up area on the north-northwestern side of Topolog. A Roman-period villa rustica lies at the northwestern edge of Topolog.

Transport

Topolog commune is connected to the county’s public transport network via the Tulcea–Topolog route.
