Crișan – Waterways, Nature and Culture

The Rowmania Ecotourism Centre Crișan is located on the Sulina branch. It is a starting point for Canotca tours. The extension of Tourist Route 13 ends at the Ecological Information and Documentation Centre in Crișan.

Water

Tourist Route 1 runs via Crișan to Mila 23, continuing to Maliuc and then to Tulcea. Tourist Route 2 leads via the Crișan Canal and Caraorman, then returns to Tulcea via Crișan, the Sulina branch and Maliuc.

Tourist Route 3 passes through Crișan and continues via the Crișan Canal and the Caraorman Canal to Lakes Puiu, Roșu and Roșuleț and on to Sulina. Tourist Route 6 begins in Crișan and leads via the Old Danube, Mila 23, the Eracle Canal, Lopatna Gârla and the Lopatna Canal to Lake Trei Iezere.

Tourist Route 7 begins and ends in Crișan and leads via the Old Danube, the Magearu Canal and the Sulina branch. Tourist Route 9 runs from Crișan via Red Lake and Sulina back to Crișan. A thematic waterway operated by the Rowmania Centre led via the Crișan Canal, Lake Capcicova, Lake Zapadna and Lake Iacob back to the Crișan Canal.

Recreational and leisure tourism in Crișan includes trips on the adjacent canals. Birdwatching takes place in Crișan and covers almost all bird species found in the Danube Delta. Sport fishing is practised in designated sport-fishing areas. Cupa Deltei la Știucă is a fishing event organised in Crișan for spinning anglers from all over the country.

The Rowmania Ecotourism Centre Crișan provided tourists with an audio guide featuring the calls of frequently occurring birds from the surrounding area. Touristically interesting facilities in Crișan include an ARBDD information centre.

Nature

The Sulina branch crosses the municipality of Crișan from east to west. Caraorman Forest is designated as a natural monument and comprises stands of oak, ash and poplar with dense undergrowth and climbing vegetation with a Mediterranean appearance. Caraorman Forest is located in the vicinity of Crișan, occupying the central part of the Caraorman spit on the southern side of the Sulina branch, and is considered a tourist attraction.

Culture

Crișan is home to the Lipovan folklore ensemble “Privighetorile Deltei”, which sings traditional songs. The Ukrainian folklore ensemble “Rebalka” is also represented in Crișan and contributes to preserving local traditions and customs through traditional costumes, music and dance. The Beliscul de la Crișan monument is located in the village of Crișan of the same name.

The Ivan Patzaichin Museum – Centre for Community Innovation in Mila 23 in the municipality of Crișan invites visitors to discover important stages in Patzaichin’s life and the history of the picturesque village. Stipoc Monastery, also called Schitul Sfântul Atanasie, is located on the Stipoc spit between the municipalities of Chilia Veche and Crișan. Stipoc Monastery includes a small wooden church in the Moldavian style.

In Crișan, visitors can meet traditional boatbuilders, known as marangozi. Weaving fishing nets is one of the traditional crafts in Crișan that visitors can learn more about.

Local Cuisine

Festivalul Borșului Pescăresc is regarded as a local tradition in Crișan. Traditional fish borscht is one of the dishes that visitors can eat in Crișan. Mint brandy is known as a branded product in Crișan.
