Maliuc on the Sulina Arm: Lakes, Taraschina and Culture

In the outskirts of the municipality of Maliuc lies the Neo-Eneolithic settlement of Taraschina. It is considered the oldest human settlement known to date in the Danube Delta and has been declared a historical monument. In the Maliuc district, Taraschina is located as a submerged Chalcolithic tell settlement mound. Taraschina provides evidence of prehistoric landscapes whose areas are now flooded by the waters of the Danube. Thus, in one specific place, a very early settlement phase and the transformed aquatic landscape of the Danube Delta come together. As a Chalcolithic tell settlement mound, Taraschina points not only to its great age but also to a form of settlement that now lies underwater.

Nature

Maliuc is located in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and on the Sulina Arm. The municipality's surroundings include several lakes, while Maliuc Dendrological Park, with its grounds established in 1969, provides a distinct historical reference. The river arm, open water areas and park grounds form different components of the landscape, differing from one another in their form and history of development. Fortuna Lake is located in the municipality's surroundings. With an area of 977.5 hectares, it is one of the large lakes of the Danube Delta. Gorgova Lake is also located in the surrounding area; it is approximately 14 square kilometres in size and almost round. Eight adjoining lakes surround Gorgova Lake. Nebunu Lake is one of the tourist attractions in the context of the municipality of Maliuc. Fortuna Lake, Gorgova Lake and Nebunu Lake therefore differ in their characteristics: the large water surface of Fortuna Lake, the almost round shape and eight adjoining lakes of Gorgova Lake, and the classification of Nebunu Lake as a tourist attraction. The size specifications for Fortuna Lake and Gorgova Lake thus reflect two different scales for the water areas described, while the round shape and adjoining lakes additionally characterize Gorgova Lake.

Culture

Maliuc's annual cultural life includes the local event “Serbările Scrumbiei”. A painting exhibition is also held every year. The “Maliuc” art camp likewise adds to this programme annually. The three formats have different emphases: the event has its own local name, the exhibition is dedicated to painting, and the art camp is dedicated to creating art together. Event dates and starting times should be checked before departure if an annual cultural format is included in the plans.

Local traditional ensembles perform in Maliuc and in the villages of the municipality. Thus, in addition to the cultural formats mentioned annually, performances of traditional works are also part of local cultural life.

Route
