Beștepe on the Danube Delta: Nature, Waterways and Culture

The Dealurile Beștepe are a protected natural area and a viewpoint offering wide-ranging panoramas over the waters and reed beds of the Danube Delta. The area around the Dealurile Beştepe and the nearby wetlands along the Sfântu Gheorghe distributary is included in the Natura 2000 site “Beştepe-Mahmudia”. Near the fortress and the shore, a loess island with a preserved fragment of Pontic desert steppe covered with grasses is visible. The panorama encompasses both the waters and reed beds of the Danube Delta; the protected landscape and wetlands define the natural surroundings.

Nature and Water

Navigation is possible on the Sf. Gheorghe distributary; it is considered an attraction of the Beştepe commune. From Beștepe, the Sfântu Gheorghe distributary also provides a water connection into the interior of the Danube Delta. Before travelling by boat, current timetables and information on route conditions should be checked.

History and Cultural Sites

Piatra lui Boboc is a fortified settlement from the 4th to 3rd century BC, attributed to the La Tène period and the Geto-Dacian culture. The archaeological site Situl arheologic de la Beştepe - Piatra lui Boboc (Be 101) is listed as a heritage site and lies approximately 1.2 km northeast of Beștepe. The “Ruinele Cetăţii Beştepe” ruins are also located in the immediate surroundings of Beștepe. The historic site Cetatea Proslaviţa Nufăru is located in the vicinity of Beștepe.

The nearby area also includes the Biserica Ortodoxă Beştepe church and several named hills: Beş Tepe, Piatra lui Boboc and Dealul Cetăţuii.

Customs and Festive Days

In Beștepe, traditional customs associated with birth, marriage and death, with feasts of the Orthodox calendar, and with certain agricultural festivals are preserved. Winter customs in Beștepe include Colindatul, Pluguşorul, Semănatul, Sorcova and Capra, observed between Christmas Eve on 24 December and Epiphany on 6 January. On 26 October, Beștepe celebrated the village festival marking the patronal feast of the Sfântul Dumitru church. The calendar of festivities thus ranges from family rites of passage and Orthodox holidays to events shaped by agricultural traditions. For customs tied to specific calendar dates, current dates should be checked before travelling, especially for the winter customs and the village festival on 26 October.

Getting There

Beștepe can be reached from Tulcea via a county road; the road connection is given as approximately 25 km. In addition, from Beștepe, the Sfântu Gheorghe distributary provides a water connection into the interior of the Danube Delta. For travel planning, the two connections are clearly different: the county road is described as an overland route of approximate length, while the Sfântu Gheorghe distributary is a waterway into the Delta. Current route conditions should be checked before departure when travelling via the county road.
