The Roman Catholic Church of Şărmăşag was built between 1991 and 1993 and consecrated on 4 July 1993. The Reformed Church of Şărmăşag stands in the centre of the village on a hill. Conacul Kemény and the ethnographic museum

The Conacul Kemény in Şărmăşag is a particularly distinctive combination of history and regional culture. It was built in 1745 by Kemény Farkas, a nephew of Kemény János. A bronze bust of Kemény János, created by Sepi Iosif, stands in the grounds of Conacul Kemény.

The Şărmăşag ethnographic museum was established by decision in 2001, opened its doors in 2004 and was given rooms in Conacul Kemény. It displays more than 100 objects donated by villagers. After renovations from 2006 to 2009, Conacul Kemény housed conference and celebration rooms, a library and an ethnographic exhibition. The objects contributed by villagers in particular give the museum visit a direct connection to the region’s everyday culture.

Hills, railway history and chapel

The commune of Şărmăşag lies in the Dealurile Sălajului hills. Its hilly relief is largely uniform; ridges border the village area to the east and northeast. This clearly described landscape lends itself to observation as a focus in its own right alongside the historical sites. Railway history is also part of the local history: the Carei–Jibou railway line began operating in 1887; Şărmăşag subsequently developed into an important railway junction. A small Catholic chapel was also built in Şărmăşag for the wife of Kemény Farkas; it was extended in 1991–1992.
