Sânpetru Almașului – Wooden Church and Traces of Historical Settlement

Sânpetru Almașului combines a distinctive wooden church with traces of very different settlement periods. The wooden church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was built at the beginning of the 17th century from five massive oak beams. It stands on the site of an older church dating from 1494. At Dâmbul Cremenii, on the right slope of the Valea Strâmba valley, about 1 km east of the village, there is a Paleolithic settlement. A Neolithic settlement in Sânpetru Almașului is also recorded at Cârcu.

Village Structure and Landscape

Sânpetru Almașului is characterized by barns with an auxiliary room attached under the same roof. The outbuildings are arranged in groups. The village is set back from the main roads, and its buildings are closely connected to the natural surroundings. Mănăstirea Strâmba Monastery is located in the vicinity of Sânpetru Almașului. The pilgrimage route “Calea Precistii” is a prayer route centered on the miraculous icon “Dulcea Sărutare,” which is kept at Mănăstirea Strâmba Monastery.

The named road connection and the access route from the direction of Zalău pass through several places in the same regional area. Sânpetru Almașului thus appears both in the connection between Hida and Păduriș and in the sequence of places leading toward the monastery.
