Gârceiu: Churches, History and Mountains

Gârceiu is located about 10 km from Zalău, the county seat, on the road connecting the county seat with Cehu Silvaniei.

The Orthodox Church of Gârceiu is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, “Sfânta Treime”. As part of restoration work at the Orthodox parish of Gârceiu, the iconostasis was blessed.

The two churches in Gârceiu reflect different historical points of reference. At the Orthodox parish, the blessed iconostasis is connected with restoration work. The Reformed Church links the former wooden building, the start of construction of the present church, its consecration, and later changes to the 20-metre-high tower and its furnishings with specific years.

The history of the village also includes the Reformed Church with its multifaceted construction history. It stands on the site of a wooden church from the 17th century, which was demolished in 1890. Construction of the present church began that same year; it was consecrated in 1904. Individual structural elements also preserve their own traces of time. The 20-metre-high tower received four additional turrets in 1946. The oldest bell of the Reformed Church was cast as early as 1827, making it older than the present church building. The tower and bell add two specific details of the church building to the dates in its construction history.
