Ceraşu: Mountains, Hiking Trails and History

Landscape and Nature

Cerașu is a submontane settlement surrounded by mountain ridges and peaks; these peaks include Vârful lui Crai, Clăbucetul, Leurdeanul, Căprioru and Chimniți.

To the north of Cerașu, the landscape has montane characteristics; spruce, fir and beech dominate the vegetation in this area.

A reserve for bears and wild boar is located in the village of Valea Borului; a fauna reserve is situated in the village of Valea Lespezii.

The Teleajen River is of particular interest for fishing and has a population of brown trout.

Thus, different natural features appear alongside one another within the commune: mountain ridges and peaks define the settlement, montane landscape characteristics emerge in the north, and the two reserves are located in the villages of Valea Borului and Valea Lespezii.

Hiking Trails

The tourist trail from Slon passes through the Teleajen Subcarpathians, follows the Drajna River, crosses the Tătaru Mountains and continues over Dealul Grohotișului.

In the Cerașu area, hikes to Vârful lui Crai are offered; its elevation is given as 1,473 m.

Hikes towards the valley of the Basca River are also offered in the Cerașu area.

The trail from Măneciu to Tabla Buții leads to a pass between the Ciucaș and the Tătaru Mare ridge.

The Măneciu–Vârful lui Crai–Tabla Buții hiking trail is marked with a “blue cross” symbol.

The Cerașu–Ciuga–Vf. Craiu–Tabla Buții trail is designated as a tourist hiking trail.

The Cerașu–Ciuga–Schinda–Boncuța–Valea Stânii trail is designated as a tourist hiking trail.

The Cerașu–Valea Lespezii–Stângaciu–Gămălie trail is designated as a tourist hiking trail.

Today, access to Pasul Tabla Buții is via forest roads and tourist trails.

The routes described include several landscape areas: the trail from Slon initially follows the Drajna and then crosses the Tătaru Mountains, while the routes from Cerașu run via Ciuga, Vf. Craiu, Schinda, Boncuța or Valea Lespezii.

Culture and History

The medieval fortress “Cetatea medievală de la Slon – La Ciuga” is located in La Ciuga in the village of Slon, in the administrative unit of Cerașu, in the Dealul Grohotișului area.

The tourist trail includes the La Cinga medieval fortification from the 9th century.

The tourist trail also includes Tabla Buții Fortress, which is dated to the 13th to 16th centuries.

There are houses with traditional architecture in Cerașu.

At Pasul Tabla Buții, there are trenches, shelters and shell craters from battles fought there; the Heroes’ Cemetery is also located there.

The historical and local character is also defined by the medieval fortress in La Ciuga, the houses with traditional architecture found in Cerașu and the aforementioned structures at Pasul Tabla Buții.
