Poiana Câmpina: Saltwater Spring and Monastic History

Poiana Câmpina combines a hilly landscape in the valley of the Prahova River with a natural saltwater spring and an unusually rich, multifaceted history. The former salt baths have been discontinued, but the spring remains a defining feature of the town. Historic complexes, parks, and cultural events add specific destinations for different days to this picture.

Baths

Nature

The Drumul Fructelor passes through Poiana Câmpina and continues through villages, hilly landscapes, and orchards. There are rest areas along the route. Thus, in addition to the spring’s water, rural landscapes and a route shaped by villages are also central features.

The “Mareșal Alexandru Averescu” Park is crossed by several paved paths connecting it with the houses on Strada Gării. A bronze bust of Marshal Alexandru Averescu stands in the center of the park. Poiana Câmpina CFR railway station is an important point on the Bucharest–Brașov railway line.

Culture

The former Schitul Poiana is a local historic monument dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The surrounding wall and a bell tower have been preserved. Along the Câmpina–Poiana Câmpina–Provița/Breaza route, Schitul Poiana is designated as a 17th-century historic monument with its surrounding complex and underground vaults preserved.

The construction of Mănăstirea Poiana was commissioned by Toma Cantacuzino in 1690 and completed in 1711. The bell tower, monks’ cells, administrative buildings, and surrounding walls were completed in 1721. Cultural events include the interregional music competition festival “Flori de cântec prahovean”.

The traditional festival for Sf. Maria is titled “Cântec, joc și voie bună”. Poiana Câmpina’s Community Day is associated with 15 August. For events held on a fixed date, it is advisable to check the current date before travelling.

History

The first salt baths in Poiana Câmpina operated in the former town hall until 1908. In autumn 1935, the Royal Cultural Foundation established a higher agricultural school in Poiana Câmpina for young people from the hill and mountain villages of the Buzău, Făgăraș, and Prahova counties. The former history of the baths and the later educational institution reflect two distinct historical influences on the town.

Leisure

“Triumf” Park has a stage, children’s play areas, recreational spaces, and a street library. “Pietrișu” Park offers a children’s playground and a recreational area. Travellers should check the current route conditions for the Drumul Fructelor; when travelling by train, the applicable timetables should be observed.
