Slobozia Oancea: Landscape, History and Routes

Landscape

South of Slobozia Oancea lies Balta Maicăş, which is separated from the Prut River by embankments. The Oancea stream is 7 km long and has a valley with very steep slopes. Immediately south of Slobozia Oancea, the western boundary of the PNLJPI protected area once again meets DN 26.

The landscape south of the village is therefore shaped by bodies of water, embankments, a distinctly steep stream valley and the protected area. Balta Maicăş and the Prut River represent different landscape elements: Balta is separated from the river by embankments, while the Oancea forms its own valley with steep slopes.

History

Slobozia Oancea was originally called Slobozia Onești. The village probably originated between 1830 and 1860 as a slobozie on the estate of the boyar Constantin Onu. In 1864, land was allocated to the residents of Slobozia Oancea by Alexandru Ion Cuza and Mihail Kogălniceanu.

The village’s history thus connects the former name Slobozia Onești with its origins as a slobozie and a later land allocation. Historical points of reference include Constantin Onu as well as Alexandru Ion Cuza and Mihail Kogălniceanu.

Culture

The Biserica Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul church is located in the immediate vicinity of Slobozia Oancea. The Biserica Sfinţii Arhangeli Mihail şi Gavriil church is located nearby. The Biserica Brăneşti church is also located in the surrounding area.

La Răspântii, Dealul Seaca, Dealul Cartofăriei and Dealul Ariei are four named hills in the immediate surroundings of the village. Experiences

On the “De la Vlădești la Șovârca” route, the path comes very close to the Prut River after leaving Slobozia Oancea. Birdwatching is possible along the shores of Balta Șovârca on this route. Cycling is possible on this route on the national road as well as on the embankments and paths around the lakes, but only with permission from the Border Police.

Geographical Location

The Oancea commune, with the villages of Oancea and Slobozia Oancea, is crossed by the DN 26 national road between Galați and Murgeni. A road bridge over the Prut connects Oancea with the Republic of Moldova.

DN 26 thus forms a road connection between Galați and Murgeni running through the commune. In addition, Oancea is connected to the Republic of Moldova by a road bridge over the Prut.
