Șendreni between archaeology and the Siret Lowlands

Șendreni combines archaeological traces, the lowlands of the lower Siret, and sacred sites into a diverse local landscape. Between archaeological sites, riverbanks, a raised terrace, a church, and a monastery, there are different approaches to history, landscape, and religious life. Those interested in cultural history will find several clearly distinct topics here; nature and bird enthusiasts will encounter a separate focus in the Siret Lowlands.

Archaeology and history

The archaeological area of Șendreni bears the LMI code GL-I-s-B-02995. The archaeological site of Șendreni includes Roman settlement remains as well as settlement remains from the Migration Period of the 10th and 11th centuries. Thus, the historical horizon extends beyond a single era. The Casa lui Secan archaeological site in Șendreni includes settlement remains from the Hallstatt period, the Roman era, and the Early Middle Ages of the Dridu culture. Together with the archaeological area of Șendreni, these named archaeological sites encompass various historical periods.

Archaeological sites at Balta Mălina

The Casa lui Secan archaeological site is located 500 metres northeast of Șendreni, on a raised terrace at Balta Mălina. Another site, Situl nr. 3, lies on the southeastern edge of Șendreni, in the area of the former SMT, on the bank of Balta Mălina. Situl nr. 3 in Șendreni contains settlement remains from the Hallstatt period, the Hellenistic era, and the Roman era. The terrace and the riverbank therefore belong to two named settings in which Șendreni’s archaeological themes are each connected to a specific landscape.

Siret Lowlands and bird protection

The archaeological site of Șendreni is located next to the sawmill factory on the left bank of the Siret. ROSPA0071 Lunca Siretului Inferior is a Natura 2000 site of Community interest and a special protection area for birds. The lowlands of the lower Siret, Lunca Siretului Inferior, extend from the urban area of Mărășești to the village of Șendreni in Galați County. For nature and bird enthusiasts, this landscape is a separate area of interest alongside the archaeological sites. Șendreni thus demonstrates a connection between archaeological settings and a river lowland, without the two areas merging into a single place.

Church and monastery

The Biserica Sf. Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril church is located on Strada Bisericii in Șendreni. Near Șendreni, the “Sfântul Mucenic Trifon” Monastery was founded in 2001 on land that had been transferred to the church after the return of former church property. The monastery was founded as a place of prayer, piety, and spiritual zeal for salvation. The church and monastery therefore mark two specific sacred points of reference: the church is located along a street in Șendreni, while the monastery is connected to the nearby village through its founding history and spiritual orientation.

Other places

Other places include Odaia Manolache, Tulucești, Ivești, Slobozia Oancea, Poiana, and Galaţi.
