On the left bank of the Danube lies Galaţi’s 18-hectare Botanical Garden. In the “Flora and Vegetation of Romania” section, the displays range from the steppe to the alpine zone. This brings the riverside location on the Danube and Romania’s various landscapes together in one garden.

Nature

The Aquarium also focuses on different habitats. It displays fish species from the lower Danube basin, the Mediterranean and tropical freshwater habitats. The exhibition thus combines a regional river basin with the Mediterranean and tropical inland waters.

The natural history attractions also include the Astronomical Observatory. Its retractable roof and modern optical system are among the facility’s distinctive technical features. Galaţi’s nature-related offerings therefore encompass both the plant life of various Romanian zones and fish and astronomical observation technology.

Art and Collections

The Museum of Fine Arts in Galaţi opened in 1967 and is considered the first museum of contemporary Romanian art. It displays around 400 works in exhibition halls and outdoors in the museum park. The collection is therefore not limited to indoor spaces; the museum park is also part of the presentation.

At the Lapidarium, Galaţi presents the exhibition “Archaeological Landmarks on the Lower Danube” with cultural artefacts and archival images of significant archaeological sites in Galaţi County. Another exhibition is entitled “Traditional Civilization of Southern Moldavia”. Both exhibition titles place the collections within the history and cultural context of the Lower Danube and Southern Moldavia.

History

Casa Colecțiilor is located in the former building of Farmacia Ţinc. The building was constructed in 1900, is listed as a historic monument and, with its characteristic stylistic elements, reflects the architecture of early 20th-century Galaţi. It was restored between 1994 and 2006. The building’s past and its subsequent preservation are directly connected to its history.

The fortified Precista Church is Galaţi’s oldest historic monument. It was built between 1643 and 1647 during the reign of Vasile Lupu. The bell tower has loopholes. These could be used to observe the Danube Valley and, when necessary, served as defensive fortifications. The church thus preserves its construction period, defensive function and connection to the Danube Valley at the same time.

Danube

In Galaţi, the Danube is not only part of the landscape but is also connected to a ferry service. A ferry for vehicles and passengers connects Galaţi’s Danube promenade with I.C. Brătianu in Tulcea County. The connection thus runs from the city on the left bank of the Danube to a destination in Tulcea County.

Galaţi brings together botanical and natural history facilities, contemporary art, archaeological collections, historic architecture and a direct connection across the Danube. The Botanical Garden, Aquarium, Observatory, museums, Casa Colecțiilor and Precista Church each preserve their own distinct focus.
