Poiana – Piroboridava, Siret and village history

Poiana is home to the archaeological site “Situl arheologic de la Poiana – Cetăţuia de la mal, Piroboridava”.

Piroboridava comprises a fortified settlement. It dates from the Roman era and is assigned to the 1st to 2nd centuries AD.

The municipality of Poiana is marked on a map. It is Dimitrie Cantemir’s map from 1737.

One of the oldest documents about the village of Poiana dates from 4 July 1522. It comes from the time of Prince Ştefăniţă Voievod.

The forest in the municipality of Buciumeni is included in the list of historical monuments of Galaţi County. The plateau with the ancient Piroboridava fortress and the reservoir on the Siret are also included in this list. All three sites are listed there as Type I monuments. These sites offer opportunities for leisure activities and tourism development.

Geographical setting

The village of Poiana is located on the ridge of Poiana-Nicoreşti Hill.

Poiana has an elongated settlement pattern. This shape follows the alignment of the houses along the municipal road DC72. In the Pleşa area, the DC72 coincides with the valley.

The first part of the village of Poiana extends westwards along the DC73 from the intersection of the DC73 with the Valea Rea valley.

The area’s hydrographic network drains into the Siret River. The Siret enters Galaţi County west of Poiana.

The Călimăneşti Reservoir is located on the Siret within the municipality of Poiana. The reservoir is used for irrigation. It is also used to generate electricity.

The location on the hill ridge, the route of the DC73 and the alignment of the houses along the DC72 describe a village whose named points are closely connected with the valley, road and river course. Valea Rea is located at the western starting point of the first part of the village, and near Pleşa the DC72 coincides with the valley.

For further orientation within the same local structure, here are the directly associated places in a compact sequence: Slobozia Oancea, Tuluceşti, Galaţi, Șendreni, Odaia Manolache and Ivești.

The village of Poiana is located at the intersection of the DC73 and the DC72.

The DC72 joins the DC73. The connection then continues via the DC69. Along this road route, Poiana is connected with the villages located on the Siret. These include Piscu Corbului, Coasta Lupei, Mălureni, Ionăşeşti and Cosmeşti. Poiana has an exit onto the DN24.

The municipality of Poiana has no direct railway connection. Cosmeşti and Berheci are the nearest railway stations. Cosmeşti is located on the Mărăşeşti–Galaţi line. Berheci is located on the Tecuci–Bârlad line. Both stations are each approximately 20 km from Poiana.
