Fundata: Mountain Landscape, Sports and Tradition

Elevation

The municipality of Fundata is located in the Rucăr-Bran Corridor, between the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului Massifs.

It occupies the upper levels of the Bran Platform, which are situated at an altitude of 1,200 to 1,300 metres.

Some residential buildings in the municipality are located above 1,300 metres, with some even at an altitude of 1,400 metres.

Historically, Fundata was located on the border between the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and Wallachia.

Fundata therefore combines a clearly defined elevation, a location between two massifs and a historical border position. The local altitude information ranges from the upper levels of the Bran Platform to individual residential buildings at 1,400 metres.

Getting there

Travel by road to Fundata is from Brașov or Pitești via the E574; the roads in the area pass through mountainous terrain with hairpin bends.

Sports and trails

The Cheile-Grădiștei Fundata complex is home to a biathlon arena.

It is Romania’s only internationally homologated biathlon arena.

The sports base of the Cheile-Grădiștei Fundata resort is located at an altitude of 1,300 metres.

It is used for training camps as well as national and international competitions.

The red cycle loop trail no. 11 in Piatra Craiului National Park begins in Dâmbovicioara.

It leads back to Dâmbovicioara via Podu Dâmboviței, Valea Cheii, Fundățica, Fundata, Șirnea and Ciocanu.

Hiking route 01MN30 connects the village of Fundata with Cabana Padina.

It passes over Muntele Bucșa and by Refugiul Strunga.

The named starting points, destinations and intermediate locations give the two routes a specific geographical sequence.

The trails have different starting and ending points: the cycle loop leads from Dâmbovicioara via several places back to Dâmbovicioara, while the hiking route runs from the village of Fundata to Cabana Padina.

Experiences

The Alpine Coaster at the Cheile-Grădiștei Fundata resort is approximately 1.6 kilometres long.

It has two spectacular uphill sections.

The ride is intended for adults and children aged three and over.

The age rule for riding with children is clearly defined: children between three and seven years of age may use the Alpine Coaster only together with an adult.

The adventure park at the Cheile-Grădiștei Fundata resort offers tree climbing on varied courses.

Culture and history

The Nicolae-Frunteș Museum is located in Șirnea.

The traditional lighting of the flame for Olympic Day takes place there.

The “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Church is located in the village of Fundata, in the municipality of Fundata.

It is dated to 1843.

The 57th edition of the traditional “Măsura Laptelui” festival in Șirnea, in the municipality of Fundata, featured traditional dishes, folk music, scenes from everyday life and shepherds’ games.

Fundata was the first locality liberated by Romanian troops.
