Landscape and location

In the north of Argeș County, Bughea de Jos lies in the subcarpathian zone of the Southern Carpathians and on the left bank of the Bughea River. The location therefore combines the riverbank with a landscape shaped by hills.

At 886 metres, Dealul Ciocanu defines the elevation of Bughea de Jos. The hills are predominantly covered with deciduous and coniferous forests; there are also meadows and orchards. The municipality’s wildlife, typical of hilly landscapes, includes hares, foxes, wolves and bears, among others.

Monastery and historical evidence

Mănăstirea Ciocanu is located in the municipality of Bughea de Jos in Argeș County and has been documented since 1547. At that time, it was founded by villagers from Malu. The Ciocanu complex was converted from a skete into a monastery in 1992.

Mănăstirea Ciocanu has a newer church dedicated to the “Holy Apostles Peter and Paul”. The foundation stone for this church was laid in 1994. Thus, both the older development of the complex and the newer church with its dedication form part of the history of the place.

Schitul Ciocanu dates back to the 17th century and was rebuilt in 1825. The wooden church “Entrance into the Church” from 1825 is part of the Schitul Ciocanu ensemble.

In the Hulubești area, a stone cross stands opposite the house of Amzică Ana; it dates from 1757. Bughea de Jos has been documented as a village since 1549.

The historical evidence therefore ranges from the documented history of the village to religious complexes and individual structural markers within the municipality. The history of Ciocanu includes its development from a skete into a monastery, the rebuilding of the skete and the construction of the newer church.

Village culture and the annual cycle

The Muzeul Sătesc Bughea de Jos is a local cultural institution. Historical local crafts included leatherworking, woodworking and the production of “pâslari”. These crafts point to practical village culture, while the museum constitutes a local cultural institution in its own right.

“Focul lui Sumedru” marks the beginning of the pastoral year. The fire is lit on the night of 25–26 October.

Cycling, hiking and trails

The cycling community from Câmpulung has created cycling routes on Dealul Ciocanu. Râpa Șoimului is considered an area for hiking.

In the vicinity of Bughea de Jos, county road DJ732C runs through the area; it leads east towards Câmpulung and southwest towards Godeni and Schitu Golești. Rail access for Bughea de Jos is via Câmpulung.
