Sălciua de Jos: Caves, Waterfall and Regional Culture

Nature and Geology

In Sălciua de Jos, the trail marked with a red cross to the Balconul de la Poarta Zmeilor begins; the ascent can take up to three hours. In Sub Piatră, in the Sălciua commune, the Peștera Poarta Zmeilor cave is located at an altitude of around 1,150 m in the western Trascău Mountains.

Access to the Peștera Poarta Zmeilor leads from the DN 75 via the centre of Sălciua de Jos, then along the unpaved DC 130 and a footpath marked with a red cross and described as difficult. The natural arch Poarta Zmeilor is located 15 m from the cave entrance and was formed by erosion, corrosion and the dissolution of limestone.

The Peștera Huda lui Papară cave has 2,022 m of galleries richly adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. It is classified as a Class A cave of exceptional value and represents the national and international speleological heritage.

The Cascada Dâlbina waterfall in the Vânătările Ponorului nature reserve plunges 25 m over a limestone wall. Access to Vânătările Ponorului from Sălciua de Jos is via the DC 105 through Sub Piatră towards Valea în Jos or Valea Poienii.

Hiking trail 10MN04 between the Peștera Poarta Zmeilor cave and Izvoarele on the Bedeleu Plateau is temporarily closed.

Trails and Viewpoints

The Balconul de la Poarta Zmeilor viewpoint is a wooden structure suspended from a rock face. From there, it offers an approximately 180-degree panoramic view.

Culture and History

The Romanian Orthodox church of Mănăstirea Sub Piatra was built in 1797. Mănăstirea Sub Piatra preserves valuable icons from the former monastery, including a Deisis icon and icons dating from 1753.

Access to Mănăstirea Sub Piatra is via the DN 75 towards Sălciua de Jos, followed by a 5 km turn-off to the left to Sub Piatră.

The Valer Butură Ethnographic Museum was inaugurated on 20 October 2010 and named after the ethnographer Valer Butură. The ethnographic museum in Sălciua displays traditional household objects in two rooms, including a loom, a bed, crockery and traditional costumes. It is housed in a Moțe house with a wooden veranda and thatched roof.

The Târgul de la Sălciua was established from 1909 onwards with two annual fairs: the Târgul Mieilor on 4 April and the Târgul oilor on 20 October. Four revived editions of the Târgul de la Sălciua included animal shows, folklore performances, art exhibitions and presentations of local traditions.
